With Broadway shows like The Boys In The Band and The Prom making their way to Netflix for their own individual revivals, Broadway has a little bit of room freed up on the Great White Way for another fantastic LGBT production to make it’s way onto the stage; The Tony Winning (2003 Best Play) production Take Me Out is returning to Broadway.
This return of Take Me Out is the first Broadway revival of Richard Greenberg’s groundbreaking production. The show follows follows Darren Lemming, the star center fielder for the Empires. Lemming reveals he is gay and proceeds to endure a litany of long-held (and previously unspoken) prejudices. Between friendships with teammates being fractured and hostility from teammates, Darren also has to face the challenges of being a gay person of color that is participating in a true American institution. The Empires struggle to rally toward a championship season, all the while both the fans and the players begin to question what tradition means, their own loyalties and how much the price of victory truly is.
In the new production, Grey’s Anatomy star Jesse Williams makes his Broadway debut. Co-stars will be Suits actor Patrick J. Adams and Modern Family star and Emmy nominee Jesse Tyler Ferguson. Williams exclusively told Entertainment Weekly “I’m excited as hell to be back on stage and returning home to NYC. Honored to inhabit such a compelling character while navigating storytelling that’s as resonant as the day it was written. To be able to collaborate and learn from our director Scott Ellis, an insanely talented cast and the 2nd Stage crew is the dream. Truly. I’m exactly where I want to be right now. And grateful. And terrified in the best way!”
“Tootsie” director Scott Ellis will direct the revival, set to begin previews on March 31, 2020 and open on April 23.
