Villages in Indonesia are painting themselves rainbow and it looks beautiful.
The communities of Kampung Warna-warni and Kampung Tridi in Malang were ridden with poverty. As a tactic to bring more money in, the villages decided to paint over some of their buildings and make them into a rainbow paradise.
The plan worked wonderfully as tourists came in like moths to a flame and loved to take pictures of the buildings (which gained them even more attention).
Then, the idea started to spread to other locations like Kampung Kali Code in Yogyakarta, and then eventually led to a $22,000 redesign of Kampung Pelangi or otherwise known as “Rainbow Village.”
Now, we’ll be honest. The painters of these towns probably weren’t thinking about LGBTQ rights or the colors of the rainbow flag (6 and not 8 as a campaign in Philadelphia would like).
That said, the LGBTQ community loves to take stuff and make it their own. (Look at the horror creature Babadook for example who’s been turned into LGBTQ twitter’s latest in-joke.) So, during the month of Pride, we can at the very least get together and enjoy pictures of these rainbow-colored tourist traps.
Maybe one day some of us will go visit.
