Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy?
Queen has announced Bohemian Rhapsody, the film based on the band’s story, is finally headed toward production!
A statement also appeared on the band’s website affirming the film “IS finally happening.”
A much anticipated film that has been in planning stages since 2010, Queen has been in a constant tug of war with appropriate casting and direction for Bohemian Rhapsody. Early in the development process, Sacha Baron Cohen was attached to star as iconic Queen fron tman, Freddie Mercury with direction by David Fincher or Tom Hopper—but due to the band’s reservations about Cohen’s over-the-top portrayal of Mercury and desire to focus more on the entire band’s story, Queen continued the production search. Wasn’t Freddie Mercury’s over-the-top persona why we are all still in LOVE with him after all these years? Not to mention—that voice!
Currently, Mr. Robot’s Rami Malek has signed on to play the role of Freddie Mercury. See any resemblance?
Malek's acting has earned him an Emmy and other nominations for his work on Mr. Robot, but will he have the singing chops to measure up to Mr. Fahrenheit?
Now that development is moving forward, the film will be directed by Bryan Singer who has put his spin on the X-Men franchise as well as films The Usual Suspects and Valkyrie.
There is no announcement yet as to who will play the remaining band members, Brian, Roger and John—but let’s hope it doesn’t take another seven years to decide. We can’t wait!
