As a former high school teacher, all I can think of was where were the teachers?
WPXI-TV reports that a group of students at McGuffey High School in Claysville, Pa., allegedly spread the news that if they were “anti-gay,” they were to wear a flannel shirt and write “Anti-Gay” on their hands.
The students allegedly organized the “Anti-Gay Day” on Thursday in response to the observance of the nationally recognized “Day of Silence” on Friday, where attention is called to gay and lesbian bullying and harassment in schools. LGBTQNATION.COM
Here is local news coverage of Thursday's activities.
The issue with public education is that everyone has a right to it, even the narrow minded that may never change. we hope that they may receive some book knowledge as well as common sense and humanity within our halls of academia, but some students are just so backwards and hopeless that even though you keep trying, you as well just have to figure out what to do with them in the mean time until they graduate. But to allow stupidity and hatred to go unchecked like this is awful, and unfortunately, not limited to this podunk town in Pennsylvania.
The superintendent of McGuffey School District, Dr. Erica Kolat, said they were continuing to investigate all allegations.
“We will follow our Student Code of Conduct, and file legal citations, as warranted,” said Kolat. “We resolve to ensure that all children can grow and learn in a safe, supportive environment free from discrimination.”
The harassment is apparently not over yet, however. Pittsburgh’s WPXI reported that in addition to wearing flannel shirts on Thursday, students wore orange on Friday and have another five days of “anti-gay” attire planned for next week. – NEWNOWNEXT.COM
Is it bad to say this doesn't surprise me? My teaching career had me in small rural high schools in Maine where plaid and flannels were the primary garb every day of the week, no organization needed. But to have students organizing anti-gay days which is apparently turning into anti gay weeks? The information is minimal from administrators and to that I say why? Do they feel it is the right of the students to hate? If they had organized to wear white bed sheets and scroll the n-word all over school, would that have been okay? Also, what are the teachers doing to combat this? Where are the teachers as their school receives national attention for being backwards and full of hate and discrimination? I've been in schools where atrocities were swept under the rug and my hands were tied, but to have your students participate in activities that are not so favorable new events, this has to be embarrassing. Or maybe the administration and teachers agree with the flannel wearing students and that is why activities were not stopped.
It's 2015 people. No matter where you are, you know this has to be wrong. I would be ashamed to be these kids parents and even more so their teachers.
The original pic is somewhere
The original pic is somewhere, so obviously they are the idiots behind this. They are not trying too hard to investigate this matter. I was born and raised in PA, flannel is a guys best friend so it more than likely, looked like any other day. Narrow minded rednecks who are big fish in tiny ponds, who never seem to make it in the real world because outside that pond no one sees their “self proclaimed” greatness. If it were my school, I would gay it up every day they planned their stupidity. Oh, and I would glitter and rainbow the faggot painted on the lockers….bet the school would do something then! The officials in that school cannot claim rights to speech. One group was supporting youth not taking their lives…the other spewing hatred. Nothing better to do with their time…unfortunately they probably think they’re funny and cool. The real world awaits them.
Hmm.. Because planning to
Hmm.. Because planning to wear coordinating outfits and pose with your bros is not in some way a little gay..
The administration of this
The administration of this High School should be terminated immediately, and any student found participating in this grievous act should have charges brought against them.
why do all the lesbians in
why do all the lesbians in the photo have their faces blurred? Aren't they proud to be womin loving womin?
This is beyond dumb
This is beyond dumb
How very sad that the school
How very sad that the school administration, teachers and the entire town would permit this. I'm glad it was made public and anyone tolerating this should be held accountable. We know it'll be shoved under the rug. This has got to STOP.
It absolute has to stop! The
It absolute has to stop! The day of silence will mean nothing to those kids in that school if these idiots are allowed to continue to display their hatred. And, they are planning other days that span a week? It needs to be stopped immediately.
This is heartbreaking.Â
This is heartbreaking.
Instinct, surely you did not
Instinct, surely you did not try to protect these assholes' identity with the blurs…
Nope. We did not. It was
Nope. We did not. It was the picture release within the media. As well, they are minors so I think if they were not blurred, we would have had to anyway.
