Hang on to your shawls kids! There’s a fabulous new interview in Rolling Stone featuring the iconic Stevie Nicks. In true form, Stevie shares her unique insight on a range of topics including her friendships with Tom Petty, her hit collaboration with the incomparable Prince, and she sends a very funny message out to all the drag queens who adore her.

It’s always a treat when our favorite pop idols sit down to do in-depth interviews and share candid reflections and memories with the world. Stevie Nicks did just that in speaking with interviewer, Rob Sheffield.

For me personally as an avid Stevie Nicks and Prince fan, one of the most surprising things I found out from the interview is how her hit song “Stand Back” came to be produced by Prince himself.  When asked about working with him, Stevie lovingly describes their relationship as “strange friends,” and further explains, “Stand Back” was inspired by “Little Red Corvette.” I called him and said, Can you come to the studio and listen to this song? I’ve sung over your song and written another song and you may hate it and if you do, I won’t do it. He came over to Sunset Sound and he loved it”

The rest is music history, and now that I know the back story, when I listen to “Stand Back” I can totally hear the reference to Little “Red Corvette”.

The Rolling Stone interview is a must-read for every Stevie Nicks fan. It’s full of fun and poignant admissions. Among my favorite is when she speaks about her signature fashion style, by which she has collected over 1000 shawls in her life time. She keeps them all protected in pressurized storage so that they will be preserved and passed on to her God daughters and nieces (those are some lucky girls!)

In pondering how she might have inadvertently become a style icon, Stevie expresses that her look is organically a reflection of who she is, explaining, “I could never go onstage in street clothes because it’s not who I am. I could never go out there in a pair of jeans and a denim jacket. I mean, I don’t do casual very well. Even my normal life, I’m in cashmere pants and a cashmere sweater and cashmere thoughts.”

“Cashmere thoughts!” – Seriously, how fabulous is that!

In an endearing nod to her long dedicated LGBTQ audience, Stevie also shared a message for all the ‘girls’ getting ready to twirl in their lace at this year’s “Night of a Thousand Stevies”. When Rob Sheffield tells her that its perhaps not just her music but also her fashion prowess that makes her such an idol of drag queens, Stevie interjects,

I hear the ‘Night of a Thousand Stevies” ball is going on this year — in New Orleans and New York. I’ve threatened everybody that one day they won’t know it, but I’ll be there. I’ll be in such fantastic makeup that I’ll be able to float around. Nobody will know it’s me, until I walk on stage and start singing “Edge of 17.”  Everybody will faint and they’ll have to call ambulances.”

All I know is if I ever run into Miss Stevie in person, I’m gonna be fan-boying so hard, that yes, I literally might just faint for real. If so, please promptly just call an ambulance as Stevie suggests … and STAND BACK!
