The world is a weird place indeed and it just got weirder as anti-gay former Michigan Representative Todd Courser asked his aide to create a fake gay scandal to cover up his affair with his coworker Cindy Gamrat, according to Right Wing Watch.
Courser and Gamrat are openly anti-LGBT, as they introduced a bill in Michigan that would make it illegal for anyone other than a member of the clergy to perform marriages. Courser has also said that the ruling of Obergefell v. Hodges was an “absolute tragedy” for the United States and that people are living in the end of days. Despite being anti-gay, our hyperbole-loving friend planned to cover up his affair with the help of his aide by spreading a rumor that he solicited the services of male escorts at a nightclub via a mass email to other republicans. The goal was to create a fake scandal so that any evidence of his actual affair would appear less credible. What? Is he trying the whole “homophobic people are usually the gayest” thing?
He also asked the aide to say that he was “bi-sexual porn addicted sex deviant” and a “Godless Addicted Monster.” The aide refused to send the email and, according to Out, secretly recorded this bizarre request and eventually leaked it to the media. Bill Schuette, the then-AG of Michigan charged Courser with multiple charges. Courser also recently pleaded no contest to willful neglect of duty by a public officer and a perjury charge is still pending. If convicted, Courser may face one year in jail and may have to pay a $1,000 fine.
Courser initially refused to resign because he felt that that’s what his enemies wanted but he eventually changed his mind and resigned. Gamrat was voted out of office with a vote of 91-12. The two both ran for reelection but lost.
I really don’t understand why Courser thought that this was a good idea. I don’t mean just fabricating a scandal, but also asking his aide to spread the fake scandal. If I were an aide for a House Representative I would try to steer clear of any scandals, especially ones that aren’t really believable in the first place.
But that’s just me.
