The South California mother and her boyfriend who tortured and killed a 7-year-old boy have been sentenced to life in prison and death, respectively.
Last October, we shared with you the news that 8-year-old Gabriel Fernandez had died while seeking emergency care.
When medical staff examined the boy, they discovered signs of torture. Fernadez’s skull was fractured, his ribs were broken, he showed signs of being hit with a BB gun, he had burn marks, and more.
‘The defendant admitted that he hit Gabriel harder than he hit anyone else. He admitted hitting him 10 times in the head. This is a 6-foot-2, 270-pound man. (He hit him) 20 times in the body. He admitted that he lost count,’ said Jonathan Hatami, deputy district attorney.”
Prosecutors allege that the couple tortured the boy because they thought he was gay.
Both Isauro Aguirre, the boyfriend, and the mother named Pearl Fernandez went through trial for their crimes.
Last December, a jury recommended the death penalty for Isauro Aguirre, and it seems Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge George Lomeli agrees. As such, Aguirre will be sentenced to death.
Meanwhile, Pearl Fernandez has been sentenced to life in prison. In addition, four county social workers have been charged with child abuse and falsifying records due to their negligence with Gabriel’s case.
