Cardi B has joined the conversation surrounding Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union’s transgender daughter Zaya.
Ever since Zaya officially came out as transgender and her parents expressed their support of her, transphobic rappers and musicians have come out of the woodwork to express their displeasure. But thankfully, now a big name rapper and celebrity has shown up in her corner.
Cardi B took to social media to talk for four minutes about the situation. The rapper first argued that straight/cisgender people are always questioning young transgender people and their experience.
“People are saying that this kid is too young to transition, but it’s like, ‘How old is too young?’” she asked on Instagram live. “If you’re born thinking you’re a girl in a boy’s body, how old do you have to be to keep knowing that that’s who you are? That’s who you are, that’s your identity.”
“What’s the point of you being older and then transitioning, and being like, ‘Damn, I shoulda been do this. I coulda been found my happiness if I woulda been do it.’” She added. “Let people find their happiness. Especially kids. Let them feel comfortable doing what they want to be,” she said.

We’re glad and thankful that bigger names are coming out to support the Wade-Union family. Hopefully, they can shut down the transphobes trying to take away Zaya’s shine.
That said, we do have to remember that Cardi B has her own unfortunate history when it comes to LGBTQ people/issues. This isn’t necessarily to take away praise of her support, mind you, but to keep in mind.
Specifically, we’re talking about the controversy Cardi B got into late last year around the topic of AIDS. After being angered by Access Hollywood misquoting her, Cardi ranted in a similar social media recording that she hoped the publication caught AIDS.

After receiving backlash for that comment, she then doubled down on her comment. Mainly, she focused on calling out Access Hollywood for using her child for clickbait.
“I could have somebody babysit my f****** kid, but it’s like it’s a wack feeling when your kid not even trying to fuck with you and call somebody else mommy. That’s why you gotta spend time with your kid,” Cardi said on Instagram. “So these muthafuckas chopped what I said up — That’s not what the f*** I said! Don’t use my m******** kid for clickbait, b****. Don’t f***** cut s *** off trying to make me look like I’m a fuck ass mom cuz that’s something that I’m not. I don’t play that shit.”
With her major following, anything Cardi B says can and will have an influence on millions of people. That’s why saying words with a negative tone like wishing someone AIDS can hurt LGBTQ people. That’s true whether she means to or not. But, we enjoy her sharing a pro-trans message and we won’t take away her efforts in doing so. At the end of the day, she’s a person. A human. We just hope she can stay a responsible one with such a huge following. Thankfully when it comes to Zaya Wade, Cardi B did just that.
