Is asking for a douche autograph going too far?

Last month, we shared with you the strange story of singer Charli XCX saying, “Gay Rights” while holding a popper. She then signed the bottle for a fan. Now, it appears that she has moved onto a douche. But, it looks like she had no clue what she was signing.

Before her concert at Manchester’s O2 arena, a fan name Marcus approached the singer with a strange request. As he states on Twitter, he initially asked the singer if she would hold a bottle of poppers up to his nose. When she declined, he then asked her to sign something. A douche.

“She was like what is dis hunny,” he wrote on Twitter.

“I was just thinking what could be a really obscure and funny thing to get her to sign,” Marcus told PinkNews after the incident went viral.

He then added, “She didn’t really know what it was so her reaction wasn’t anything over the top.”

In response to his Tweet about the signing, most Twitter users’ replied with disgust and disappointment in the fan.

After the douche signing went viral, news of the item’s actually use hit the singer’s radar. Charli XCX then tweeted out a simple, “have some respect. that’s all.”

The singer then chose to elaborate on her stance. In a letter shared through social media, Charli XCX stated that she was not upset with the fan, or other fans who have played similar stunts, but at online articles that have smeared the fans as being “abusive.”

“OK, I’ve been telling myself not to say anything about this, but I just have to,” the singer wrote.

“These articles popping up about my meet and greets suggesting that fans are taking advantage/being abusive/using me for ‘online clout’ because of certain items that have been signed or brought along to meet and greets are just so ridiculous and pretentious.”

The singer assured fans that she finds it sweet that people were concerned for her wellbeing, but she felt no ill-will towards fans like Marcus. Instead, she chose to comment on how amazed she was that fans wait so long to see her.

‘I take away the fact that people wait outside in the cold for me, tell me that a certain song changed their life or that a particular album got them through a tough time.”

“I do these meet and greets because I genuinely want to hear from you,” she wrote. “I always hope and try my best to encourage freedom of expression and a safe space, both at my shows and at any community gathering for fans.

“I really hope to continue this.”
