The first official trailer is out for the upcoming Birds of Prey film.
While we have seen a “first look” video for the upcoming film, that’s all the public has seen so far. Though, we’ve also heard whispers and reviews of private/test screenings. And reviews from those screenings were very positive.
And honestly, most DC and superhero movie fans are rooting for this film. With a bisexual anti-hero as the lead role and a gay villain fighting against her (and played by Star Wars legend Ewan McGregor), it’s an easy guess why we’re excited for Margot Robbie’s upcoming film. Then throw in director Cathy Yan, the first Asian woman to direct a major box-office superhero movie, and other stars Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and Rosie Perez to boot!
But, there are some worries about the film. First, the reveal that the villain Black Mask would be gay came with some worries. Would the character actually be depicted as gay or hinted at, such as the status quo with Hollywood? Or conversely, would the film present a questionable gay storyline as has once been reported. Then news of reshoots brought more worries to the table.
But once again, we LGBTQ media fans, DC fans, and superhero fans want Bird of Prey to succeed. We want to see Harley Quinn rise in popularity (and eventually explore her relationship with Poison Ivy). We want to see DCEU knock out a few more successful films both commercially and critically. So, we’re still in Birds of Prey’s corner.
