For some actors, a movie premiere means flashbulbs, red carpets and trying to remember which camera is currently taking your picture. For Leonardo Nam, it meant looking over and seeing his husband and two sons watching him on the big screen — and realizing just how much his life had changed.
During the premiere of Descendants: Wicked Wonderland, Nam caught sight of his family as his character, Maddox Hatter, launched into the villain song “Mad.”

“I could just see the movie reflecting in their eyes,” Nam told Gayety. “I just thought to myself, ‘Right, Leo, remember this moment.’”
Honestly, that is the kind of premiere memory that beats posing for 47 nearly identical red-carpet photos.
A moment he once never imagined
The moment hit Nam especially hard because the life unfolding in front of him was one he once never expected to have.

The queer actor has spoken candidly about how difficult it was growing up to imagine marriage and fatherhood as part of his own future. Now, he gets to experience both — and share major career milestones with the family he built.
“I never thought growing up that I would be a father, be married,” he said. “I’m so grateful that I can, and I can share it with my kids.”
That gratitude was part of the reason Nam deliberately brought his entire family to the premiere. This was not simply a dad taking his kids to see his latest movie. It was a chance to celebrate a life that, for a younger version of him, might have felt impossible.
And for LGBTQ+ families watching, there was something quietly powerful about seeing one right there on the red carpet.
“To see that exposure out there for everyone in the community, I think, is always a positive thing,” he said. “I’m really glad and proud that, as a family, we’re able to do that.”
His sons are learning the history behind their family
Nam and his husband recently celebrated their 12th anniversary, giving their family another milestone worth celebrating.
Their sons are also old enough to start asking questions about the history behind their dads’ marriage — including the fact that there was a time when their family could not legally exist in the same way it does today.
“They talked about, ‘Oh, so before it wasn’t legal,’” he recalled. “We’re having these conversations now, which I really, really appreciate.”
Those conversations matter because marriage equality can sometimes feel like something younger generations have always had. For LGBTQ+ families, though, the right to marry is living history — and his sons are beginning to understand just how recently that history changed.
From impossible dream to big-screen reality
That makes the Descendants: Wicked Wonderland premiere feel like more than another stop on a promotional tour.
Nam was not simply watching his character appear on screen. He was watching his own family watch him — something he once never thought would be possible.
There were his husband and two sons, sitting together as their dad appeared in a major Disney franchise. There was the reflection of the movie in their eyes. And there was Nam quietly reminding himself to remember it.
Sometimes the biggest Hollywood moment is not the red carpet, the cameras or the credits.
Sometimes it is realizing that the life you once couldn’t imagine is sitting right beside you, watching your movie.
