The boys are back on the ice, and apparently, they’re bringing some very recognizable company with them. Heated Rivalry is already stacking up its Season 2 cast, with Milla Jovovich, Kevin Zegers and Paul Gross joining the hit hockey romance ahead of its return to HBO Max in spring 2027.

And if Shane and Ilya thought keeping their love life complicated was enough work, Season 2 is about to give them several new adults to worry about.

Meet the new faces on the ice
Zegers, known for The Madison and Transamerica, will play Coach Wiebe, while Gross, whose credits include Good Night, and Good Luck and Tales of the City, takes on the role of Commissioner Roger Crowell.
Then there’s Jovovich, whose résumé includes Resident Evil and The Fifth Element, stepping into the role of Dr. Galina Molchalina. So yes, the hockey rink is getting a little more star-studded.
They’ll join returning leads Connor Storrie and Hudson Williams, who play Ilya Rozanov and Shane Hollander, respectively. The Season 2 ensemble also includes previously announced cast members Justice Smith, Charlie Gillespie, Daniel Diemer, Shaheen Jafargholi, Robert Naylor, Sophie Nélisse, Ksenia Daniela Kharlamova, Edvin Ryding, François Arnaud, Christina Chang, Dylan Walsh, Robbie G.K., Callan Potter, Benjamin Roy, Kamilla Kowal, Emily Hampshire, Sabrina Jalees and Priyanka.
Basically, the cast list is becoming almost as crowded as the emotional baggage.
Shane and Ilya are still the main event
Created by Jacob Tierney, Heated Rivalry follows the skate-crossed love affair between rival hockey players Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov.

What starts as a secret fling between two fresh-faced rookies gradually becomes a years-long story of love, denial and self-discovery, with ambition and attraction constantly skating into each other’s way. And that long-running push and pull is exactly what made Heated Rivalry such a phenomenon.
Because while straight sports dramas have spent decades convincing audiences that two men can bond over competition, locker rooms and intense eye contact without anyone asking questions, Heated Rivalry simply decided to let the chemistry be the point. Bless it.
Heated Rivalry Season 2 takes a page from The Long Game
The second season draws from Rachel Reid’s Game Changers book series, specifically the sixth installment, The Long Game.
That story moves Shane and Ilya into a new phase of their relationship as they play for teams that are geographically closer and begin confronting what it would actually mean to make their relationship public.
Which, naturally, sounds like exactly the sort of thing that should be simple but absolutely will not be.
After all, secretly falling for your longtime hockey rival is one thing. Figuring out how to live openly while balancing professional sports, public scrutiny and a relationship you’ve spent years hiding is another.
Season 2, therefore, appears ready to take the romance beyond stolen moments and into the much messier question of what happens when love has to exist in daylight.
From Canadian hit to full-blown phenomenon
Heated Rivalry may have originated with Canadian streaming service Crave, but its U.S. arrival turned the series into something much bigger.
The show debuted on HBO Max in November 2025 before becoming a major word-of-mouth hit in early 2026. Episodes eventually reached an average viewership of more than 10 million, turning what could have been a niche hockey romance into one of those shows everyone suddenly seemed to have an opinion — and probably a favorite scene — about.
That kind of success makes the Season 2 anticipation understandable.
The audience already knows Heated Rivalry has Shane and Ilya’s chemistry working overtime. Now the show gets to throw new coaches, commissioners, doctors and assorted complications directly into their path. Because apparently, two handsome hockey players being in love wasn’t enough drama on its own.
The puck drops again in 2027
Heated Rivalry is commissioned by Bell Media’s Crave with the participation of the Canada Media Fund (CMF).
Tierney returns as writer, director and executive producer, with Brendan Brady and Jayme Alter Wilson also serving as executive producers. Lori Fischburg and Liane Cunje are producers, while Reid serves as consulting producer. Mike Goldbach joins as co-writer for Season 2.
There’s still time before the next chapter arrives, but one thing is already clear: Shane and Ilya’s long game is getting longer — and considerably more crowded.
Spring 2027 suddenly feels very far away.
