Rapper Lil Nas X, real name Montero Lamar Hill, is facing a pivotal moment—one that could ultimately clear his name if he follows a strict path forward.
As first reported by Rolling Stone, the Grammy-winning artist has been granted a “mental health diversion program” that could lead to the dismissal of his criminal case. Good news, considering Lil Nas X is celebrating his birthday this week.
The decision comes after his August 2025 arrest in Los Angeles, where he was reportedly seen walking along Ventura Boulevard in only his underwear and cowboy boots. Witness footage showed him placing a traffic cone on his head before police arrived. At the time, the rapper reassured his fans:
“Your girl is gonna be ok, y’all. ok? She’s going to be all right; she’s gonna be all right. Shit. That was fucking terrifying. That was terrifying. That was a terrifying last four days. But your girl is gonna be alright.”

According to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, the situation escalated when he allegedly assaulted responding officers, leaving at least three injured.
It gets to a point… this is so disheartening. The fact that ppl saw Lil Nas X high as a kite in the middle of LA in his underwear & tried to make tiktok videos with him instead of calling for help…pic.twitter.com/OvPQOIGPU0

Lil Nas X was taken into custody and later charged with three felony counts of battery against a police officer and one count of resisting arrest. He pleaded not guilty and was released on a $75,000 bond.

What Happened—and What Comes Next
Following the incident, Lil Nas X was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. In court, a judge determined that the episode was linked to his mental health condition, allowing him to enter a diversion program instead of proceeding through a traditional criminal trial.
Now, instead of facing a potential prison sentence of up to five years, Lil Nas X has been given a chance to move forward under specific conditions set by the court.
The Conditions Behind His Possible Case Dismissal
To avoid jail time, Lil Nas X must complete a court-ordered mental health treatment program related to his bipolar disorder. Over the next two years, he is required to obey all laws and avoid any further legal trouble. The agreement also includes restrictions such as not possessing weapons and not threatening violence.
If he successfully meets these conditions for the full two-year period, the four felony charges against him will be dismissed. However, if he fails to comply, the case could proceed, and the charges would remain in place.
A Moment of Reflection
Speaking outside the courtroom, Lil Nas X told reporters outside the courtroom,
“I’m thankful. Just very thankful. It could have been much worse.”

Why This Matters
The court’s decision reflects how mental health diversion programs are used in cases where a diagnosed condition may have contributed to an incident. These programs focus on treatment and compliance with the law over a set period of time.
For now, Lil Nas X’s case remains open under these conditions. The next court date for Lil Nas X is scheduled for July 29.
