For longtime fans, the announcement feels especially meaningful. In 2015, Kenworthy publicly came out as gay in an interview with ESPN: The Magazine, one year after winning a silver medal in slopestyle at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. Since then, he has continued to live openly and authentically, allowing fans to celebrate life’s biggest moments alongside him.

A Vacation That Turned Into Forever

According to an exclusive interview with People, the Olympian proposed to his now-fiancé Andrew Rigby on Tuesday, August 4, while the couple was vacationing in Mallorca.

The timing made the moment even sweeter. After spending their first year together navigating a long-distance relationship and their second year building a life together in New York, Gus decided it was finally time to ask the question.

Andrew had absolutely no idea what was coming. As far as he knew, the pair were simply enjoying another beautiful day on vacation.

Kenworthy carefully planned every detail.

“We took a private dinghy from the pier at the St. Regis where we were having a cocktail by the beach at the Mar Sea Club. I told Andrew I was taking him on a little adventure. Once we got to the island we climbed off the dinghy and hiked up to the top of the cliffs,” he shared.

Waiting for them at the top was a picnic blanket complete with a pitcher of margaritas made extra sweet, just the way Rigby likes them.

Once Rigby said yes, the surprises were not over.

Instead of heading back to shore, the dinghy carried the newly engaged couple out to a chartered boat where friends were waiting to celebrate the occasion together.

A Love Story Years in the Making

Like many great romances, Kenworthy and Rigby’s story includes a little bit of fate.

The two first crossed paths briefly in Sydney back in 2014. At the time, neither could have guessed that their real story would begin a decade later. They reconnected in 2024 at a mutual friend’s 40th birthday celebration, proving that sometimes the right person arrives when the timing is finally right.

Now, after Olympic medals, international adventures, and a proposal worthy of a rom-com finale, Kenworthy is beginning an exciting new chapter. If this engagement story is any indication, their future together is already off to a pretty spectacular start.
