Perhaps the most striking part of John Strand’s story isn’t simply that an underwear model eventually became a MAGA congressional candidate. It’s the contrast between the world he once moved through and the political movement he now represents.
Strand’s Journey From Modeling to Maga
During his modeling years, Strand reportedly spent time in LGBTQ+ spaces and benefited professionally from an industry that included gay media. Mother Jones reported that he attended an event at West Hollywood’s iconic gay bar The Abbey, worked an Equinox booth during West Hollywood Pride, and appeared on the cover of the French gay magazine Sensitif.

Again, none of this alleges that Strand was gay. But it does show that LGBTQ+ culture and spaces were part of his life and career during that period.
Today, however, Strand has positioned himself firmly within the conservative MAGA movement, a political world where anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric and opposition to LGBTQ+ rights have become recurring themes.
And that is where the irony becomes difficult to miss.
There is nothing inherently contradictory about someone changing their political beliefs. People evolve, sometimes dramatically. But there is something particularly striking about moving from a career that found an audience within gay media and from spending time in LGBTQ+ spaces to becoming a conservative political figure associated with a movement that has repeatedly pushed back against LGBTQ+ inclusion and protections.
For a gay audience, that contrast is hard not to notice.
The man who once appeared on the pages of a French gay magazine is now asking conservative voters to send him to Congress. They ultimately said no.

The MAGA Candidate Who Wasn’t
Strand’s political transformation may have been complete, but his congressional ambitions weren’t.

He ran in the Republican primary for Florida’s 19th Congressional District, backed by prominent MAGA figures including Mike Lindell, Lauren Boebert, and Mike Flynn. But on August 18, 2026, Jim Schwartzel won the Republican nomination, ending Strand’s bid for the seat.
So, Strand’s résumé now contains an unusually long list of chapters: international underwear model, participant in the January 6 Capitol riot, federal prisoner, Trump pardon recipient, and MAGA congressional candidate.
He didn’t make it to Congress this time.
But his story does offer a rather uncomfortable reminder that political reinvention can sometimes take a person surprisingly far from the communities and spaces that once helped shape their public life.
