Matt Bomer Stars as a Transsexual Sex Worker in ‘Anything’

The trailer for the controversial film Anything was released on Monday.  It stars Matt Bomer as a transgender sex worker named Freda Von Rhenburg, who develops a relationship with neighbor Early Landry, played by John Carroll Lynch.

When word got out that Bomer, a cisgender man, was cast as the lead in the Timothy McNeil directed film, it was met with a ton of criticism from the LGBTQ community.  Two notable names who spoke out against the casting were transgender actresses Jamie Clayton (Sense 8) and Jen Richards (Her Story), the latter of which actually auditioned for role of Freda.

It took producer Mark Ruffalo to actually speak out about the controversial casting decision.  "To the Trans community. I hear you. It’s wrenching to you see you in this pain. I am glad we are having this conversation," he tweeted.  There were still tons of request being made to recast the film even after Ruffalo tweeted his support of the trans community, but the film had already been made at that point.  He said that Bomer  "poured his heart and soul into this part. Please have a little compassion. We are all learning."

Now the trailer for the film has finally been released.  John Carroll Lynch's role of Early is a heartbroken widower who decides to get his life in order by moving to Hollywood after the sudden death of his wife, where he meets Freda, who happens to be his neighbor.  They start to develop a relationship, much to the confusion and frustration of the close people around him, notably the character of Laurette Sachman, played by Maura Tierney.

Although the film received a ton of backlash due to Bomer's casting, it did win over some when it debuted at the Los Angeles Film Festival in 2017 and took home an award for Lynch's performance.  It remains to be seen how the LGBTQ community will react to the release of this film, given the amount of negative press it has received nearly two years after it was announced that Bomer was cast to play a transgender role.

  1. Matt Bomer belong to the same

Matt Bomer belong to the same community so what's the hula-baloo all about? So the transgender people auditioned for the role; the producers did not like them so sorry for that. That's just that..
