The drag queen recently shared a playful Instagram video aimed at fans who are curious about cruising but perhaps have more questions than answers. Consider this your gay cruising safe space, because Monét is stepping into the role of professor, guru, and possibly the most fabulous guidance counselor you’ve ever had.
Welcome to Cruising 101
Gay cruising has a long history, with men seeking connections in public and semi-public spaces through subtle looks, gestures, and other forms of nonverbal communication.
According to Monét, however, there is one very important rule when you’re trying to figure out whether someone is actually interested: Three. Eye. Contacts.
Her scenario begins at the gym. You’re standing there, facing the mirror, when a handsome stranger catches your eye.
Once? Could be nothing.
Twice? Still questionable.
Three times? According to Monét, honey, we may have a situation.
The drag queen suggests making an unmistakable gesture toward the bathroom. If the person follows, well, Monét considers that a pretty clear indication of interest.
But if you’ve only exchanged one or two glances?
Don’t get ahead of yourself.
As Monét puts it, fewer than three looks could land you in trouble, joking that you’re “gonna get arrested.”
And honestly, perhaps that is the most important lesson of the entire tutorial.

Read the Room, Not Just the Eyes
While Monét delivers the advice with her trademark humor, the underlying message is worth keeping in mind: don’t assume interest based on a single glance.
Eye contact can mean absolutely anything. Maybe someone is flirting. Maybe they’re interested. Maybe they’re simply wondering why you’re staring at them.
The safest approach is always to respect boundaries and make sure interest is mutual before taking things further.
In other words, three looks might be Monét’s golden rule, but consent is the actual golden rule.
Cruising can be part of gay culture and history, but being confident doesn’t mean throwing caution out the window. Know your surroundings, respect other people’s boundaries, and look after yourself.
