Call Me By Your Name’s author announced that he’s working on a sequel to the celebrated novel.
While a sequel to the Oscar-nominated film is allegedly in the works, it looks like a second novel is also moving forward.
Acclaimed novelist André Aciman randomly posted to Twitter that he is interested in a second look at characters Elio and Oliver, but he isn’t just waiting for Hollywood to do it. Aciman says he wants to write about the characters himself.
“I would actually love a sequel to Call Me by Your Name. In fact I am writing one,” the author wrote.
Earlier, Oscar-winning screenwriter James Ivory shared that he didn’t approve of a second film, but could see it happening only if Aciman agreed.
“No, I don’t and I wouldn’t want to be involved. I can’t imagine having to make Timothée Chalamet look 45. I mean, that would be horrendous and so fake looking if that’s what they are going to do!”
“But any case, André Aciman just laughed at the idea to me. He said it was not a good idea. They can’t do a sequel, I think, without him being on board. It’s his characters and his story. But that seems to have died down a bit. I haven’t heard much about it lately.”
Now with Aciman working on a second novel, perhaps the film’s production will wait until the source material is published. If that’s so, Chalamet will have naturally aged a couple years. Maybe then, aging up Elio won’t look so terrible.
Despite Ivory’s concerns, Twitter users celebrated Aciman’s announcement. This includes Armie Hammer.
