Speaking at a press conference at the San Sebastien International Film Festival in Spain, Dame Judi Dench made a bold move by defending a certain persona non grata, actor Kevin Spacey.

Dench co-starred with Spacey in 2001’s The Shipping News. The picture shot right after the death of Dench’s husband. She told reporters at San Sebastien that Spacey was “an inestimable comfort” on the shoot, and that “he never mentioned he knew I was in a bad way.”

“He cheered me up and kept me going.”

To refresh: last October, Rent and Star Trek Discovery star Anthony Rapp told Buzzfeed that Spacey  made sexual advances when Rapp was a minor. This led to a swift, industry-wide fallout for the actor, who has now been accused of sexual misconduct by at least 30 men. He was replaced with Christopher Plummer in Ridley Scott’s All the Money in the World, and he was unceremoniously killed off for the final season of House of Cards.

Dench told reporters in Spain that she’s 100% not on-board with Spacey’s removal from projects:

“I can’t approve, in any way, of the fact that – whatever he has done – that you then start to cut him out of films.”

She continues:

"Are we to go back throughout history and anyone who has misbehaved in any way, or who has broken the law, or who has committed some kind of offense, are they always going to be cut out?

Are we going to extrude them from our history? I don’t know about the conditions of it, but nevertheless he is, and was, a most wonderful actor. And a good friend. I can’t imagine what he’s doing now.”

Do you think Kevin Spacey deserves a second chance? Do you disagree with the Dame? Feel free to let us know your thoughts in the comments.

  1. Everyone deserves a second

Everyone deserves a second chance. The big question here is:Are you doing something to atone for your mistakes?
