Yet Another Airline Mistreatment Story. This One Involves A Same-Sex Couple And Their 3 Children

Maybe flying at high altitudes over and over again does have an effect on brain power and common sense.

Yet another debacle involving boarding passengers occurred over the weekend.  This time Southwest, the airline with the heart painted on their fuselages, has a public relations mess to clean up.

Listen to Grant Morse describe the interaction he and his husband had with a gate attendant while trying to board their family on a flight from Buffalo to Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

The gate agent told them she could only allow one of the parents to board with the children.

I've had to sit through many "Now boarding Platinum Class, SkyMiles Members, First Class, Magenta Class, Silver Class, Those Who Need More Time, Those with young children and on and on and I've never heard an airline say one parent is allowed to board with the children.  Maybe I dozed off after all the colors and clubs and missed the family boarding parameters, but it sounds like she was trying out a new and personal rule.

Here's the report from WKBW with a little more information.  Apparently there was another family member traveling on this trip.

And even if the 83-year old (grand)mother was not part of the family, shouldn't she have been let on early since she may need more time to board anyway?  But no. The exit row would be fine for her.

Sounds like someone made a big mistake, and then was backed up by her supervisor.

Your thoughts?

  1. Heres the deal. Whether it

Heres the deal. Whether it was discrimination or not these employees should go through a level of sensitivity training so that the message of discrimination is never mistakenly sent. Now, the guy never said anything about his mother when telling the story so it sounds like something was left out on his end. Especially since he never said the exact words the boarding crew were using, so we don't know what happened. It is possible there was a shitty gate girl that didn't want to recognize them as a family and it is possible there were other complications and that is just how the couple took it.

She should have taken the time to explain to the man the issue or lead him directly to the supervisor for the supervisor to explain it to them. "This is for family boarding only" does not sound very good and does sound like discrimination.

Couple says "We are a family"

She is saying they are not a legitimate family. Discrimination. The end. There are likely other factors to this story that are left out but this is all we can think with the information given.

  2. Ridiculous. Southwest has

Ridiculous. Southwest has never discriminated against anyone. They accommodated my husband and I on a standby flight (original was canceled) and worked diligently to make sure we would be able to get to our destination to make our own wedding. Sounds like someone wants their 15 mins of fame. We want to be equal but throw fits when things don't go exactly the way we want. I'm on Southwest's side on this one.

    • Why does your experience

Why does your experience preclude theirs? It only takes one shitty employee to create a bad experience.

You're correct ONE employee not the entire company. Did you read the other side of the story or just what you wanted to read?
