Robyn Crawford is opening up about her life and love with the late singing sensation Whitney Houston.
For years, there was speculation surrounding Whitney Houston’s sexuality and relationship with best friend Robyn Crawford. And now, Crawford is coming forward to confirm those rumors to be true.
Crawford is doing so through her upcoming memoir titled A Song For You: My Life With Whitney Houston. In a preview except obtained by People Magazine, Crawford admits that she and Houston were dating before Houston’s’ career grew bigger.
“We wanted to be together, and that meant just us,” Crawford wrote.
The two originally met as camp counselors in 1980 and hit it off. Things quickly turned romantic between the two, but Crawford states that their flame soon dwindled. By 1992, the relationship turned from romantic to platonic. It was Houston who made the decision. She came to Crawford one day with a bible and the explanation that they couldn’t afford their relationship getting out.
“She said we shouldn’t be physical anymore, because that would make our journey even more difficult,” she shared. “She said if people find out about us, they would use this against us, and back in the ‘80s that’s how it felt.”
The excerpt goes on to mention how Crawford felt about Whitney’s mother, Cissy Houston. In 2013, Cissy stated during an interview with Oprah that she wouldn’t approve of Whitney being gay. Crawford states that Whitney’s mother has become more accepting of the LGBTQ community since that infamous interview.
The excerpt then ends with Crawford mentioning that her loyalty to Whitney continues to this day.
“Whitney knows I loved her and I know she loved me,” Crawford wrote. “We really meant everything to each other. We vowed to stand by each other.”
