Theo James has the face, the physique, the British charm and, judging by his latest sauna appearance, absolutely no shortage of reasons for fans to campaign for him to wear the tuxedo. But James Bond? He’d rather keep his privacy.

For years, James has built a career playing complicated men who exist somewhere between charming and deeply questionable. His role as Eddie Horniman in Guy Ritchie’s The Gentlemen is practically a greatest hit in that department: aristocratic, morally slippery and increasingly comfortable with criminal behavior.
It also happens to be a role that lets James enjoy plenty of attention without signing himself up for the particular level of global fame that comes with being 007.
Theo James would rather keep his private life private
Since Daniel Craig’s final outing in No Time to Die, James has repeatedly found himself on the list of actors fans think could replace him as James Bond. James, however, isn’t exactly lining up outside the casting office.

Speaking to British GQ about the prospect of becoming 007, he explained that the lifestyle that comes with the role is a bigger deterrent than the prestige is a temptation.
“Imagine, suddenly, you and I cannot walk down the street,” James said.
And for him, that loss of normalcy isn’t merely about having strangers recognize him at the grocery store. James has young children, and he’s concerned about what an enormous increase in public attention could mean for them as they grow up.
He’s also talked about how social media has made fame considerably more complicated for celebrity families. While his children are still young enough to be protected from much of that pressure, James has watched friends navigate the impact on older children, particularly when it comes to self-worth and body image.
In other words, James isn’t worried about whether Bond would look good on his résumé. He’s wondering whether Bond would make his actual life worse.
And yes, Theo James thinks he’s too old for Bond
Then there’s the age question. James has been refreshingly blunt about it, telling GQ, “I’m definitely too old now, for one,” while suggesting that taking on Bond isn’t the sort of career decision you can simply reverse once the tuxedo is hanging in your closet.
He’s previously described the prospect as something that “terrifies” him, telling The Guardian that he understands why people speculate about him but believes there are other actors who would be better suited to take on the legendary British spy.
It’s an understandable position, particularly when you consider just how enormous Bond can become. The role isn’t simply another credit on an actor’s résumé. It can redefine how the public sees them for years, sometimes decades.
And while there’s an obvious thrill in being offered one of the biggest roles in Hollywood, James has repeatedly arrived at the same conclusion: the career boost isn’t necessarily worth sacrificing the ordinary life he values.
Meanwhile, Theo James is still giving fans plenty to look at
If James doesn’t want the Bond spotlight, he’s certainly not avoiding attention altogether.
His mainstream breakthrough came with The Divergent Series between 2014 and 2016, before his role in the second season of The White Lotus introduced him to an even wider audience — and gave viewers plenty to discuss thanks to some particularly memorable nude scenes.
He later leaned into his heartthrob status with a Dolce & Gabbana campaign, appearing in a tiny white swim brief for the fragrance brand’s 25th anniversary campaign.
So while James may not be interested in becoming Britain’s next super-spy, he’s hardly allergic to making an entrance.
And then came The Gentlemen.

The Netflix series, created by Guy Ritchie, follows Eddie Horniman after he unexpectedly inherits his late father’s country estate and discovers that the property is at the center of a massive cannabis-growing operation.
Eddie initially attempts to navigate the criminal empire surrounding the estate without getting dragged too deeply into it. Naturally, that plan doesn’t exactly survive contact with reality.

By the second season, James is once again bringing his particular combination of menace and undeniable screen appeal to Eddie — including a shirtless sauna scene that has, predictably, attracted considerable attention.
Because apparently if you cast Theo James in a sauna, the plot is going to become secondary for a certain portion of the audience.
The clip shows James sweating it out shirtless, and fans were understandably quick to share their appreciation across social media.
It’s a useful reminder that James doesn’t actually need the Bond franchise to keep people interested. Between The Gentlemen, The White Lotus, his film career and the occasional decision to appear in extremely revealing advertising, he’s already figured out how to hold an audience’s attention.
Theo James is leaving Bond to someone else
For James, the answer seems considerably less complicated. He may have the jawline. He may have the British accent. He may have the ability to look devastatingly good while committing morally dubious acts.
But becoming James Bond would mean giving up the privacy and normality he clearly doesn’t want to lose. So let somebody else save the world.
Theo James seems perfectly happy making morally questionable decisions in The Gentlemen — and, judging by that sauna scene, giving fans something to talk about while he’s at it.
