The legendary Madame Morrible is getting a little bit more glamorous; for the first time in the history of the smash Broadway musical Wicked, the pivotal role will now be portrayed by a trans actress. Alexandra Billings (Transparent) is taking over the role, with performances set to start January 20, 2020. Billings joins a cast that already includes Hannah Corneau as Elphaba, Ginna Claire Mason as Glinda and Michael McCormick as The Wizard.
While we have seen Billings in shows like Shonda Rhimes How to Get Away With Murder, and Grey’s Anatomy, this will be the first time we are getting to see her step into the shoes on the massive Broadway juggernaut that Wicked has become. Previously, Billings was seen on The Great White Way in productions of Gypsy, Trojan Woman, and A Doll’s House, to name a few.
An established activist on the front lines of the ongoing fight for LGBTQ rights, Billings has received the HRC Visibility Award, Rainbow Spirit Award, and and has been inducted into the Chicago Gay & Lesbian Hall of Fame. She also gave a stirring speech at the 28th Annual GLAAD Media Awards, for which she received a standing ovation.
