I’m a huge reality TV enthusiast. Some people like zombie shows or cop dramas or hospital thrillers – I like reality TV. It goes without saying that Tyler Duckworth left his mark in the genre. Two decades ago, he co-starred in the 2006 season of The Real World: Key West. A large portion of his journey on the show focused on his sexuality and his on again-off again friendships with John and Svetlana.
It’s sad to report that Tyler Duckworth passed away at age 44 on Tuesday in his home in North Dakota. Out of respect for the late public figure and his family, I’m going to leave out some of the emerging details on his passing. I will just say that it was a sudden death, and it was confirmed online by his mother, Joni. He last posted on social media after completing a podcast appearance with other reality TV stars on August 2nd.
Tyler Duckworth was more than just a reality TV star. He was a pioneering out gay man, a devoted friend and a teacher. He was a multi-talented sportsman who participated in gymnastics, figure skating, swimming and long-distance running. He even worked behind the scenes on a few film projects and has appeared in several documentaries. Who knows what else he could have accomplished if he wasn’t taken from us so soon.

After The Real World: Key West, Tyler Duckworth competed on its sister series The Challenge. He competed in The Duel (2007), The Gauntlet III (2008), Cutthroat (2010), Rivals (2011), All Stars II (2021) and All Stars III (2022). To his credit, he was the winner of Cutthroat and Rivals. And, really, he was a mainstay on MTV from 2006 to 2011 – having embraced a generation who need a strong gay figure to look up to.
Since his passing, numerous co-stars from his time on television have posted touching sentiments on social media.
