Woman Booked Into Men’s Jail Mistaken As Transgender!
This Is The Craziest Story You’ll Read All Year!
Okay, so how am I just hearing about this?! Like, this is something I would expect to see as an article published by satire website, The Onion, not factual. In Florida, which at this point I have been led to believe is some Wonderland-esque sort of state, a cis-gendered woman was arrested and then booked into a Miami jail as a freakin’ man for almost ten hours! You’ve got to be kidding me!
According to The Miami Herald, Fior Pichardo de Veloz, a 55-year-old grandmother and a local elected official in the Dominican Republic, was mis-gendered and placed in an incorrect holding cell with men. I’ve thankfully never been to jail, so I’m basing off hearsay, but don’t they strip you and do the absolute most to deprive you of your assets and sanity before booking you? There is no way you wouldn’t be able to tell Pichardo is biologically female. The arresting officer even listed Pichardo’s gender as female.
After a strip search at Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center in West Miami-Dade, proved Pichardo once again to be female. She was sent to a medical examiner for a routine checkup due to a history of high blood pressure. There it was decided she was born a man by a jail nurse because she is currently taking hormone pills…to help with symptoms of menopause. Without doing a further physical investigation, Pichardo was now labeled a man. The nurse even decided to add a note to Pichardo’s file:
“Transgender, male parts, female tendencies.”
Pichardo was taken to an all-male jail seven miles from her holding cell and allegedly pleaded with officers that she is a woman, which fell on deaf ears. Pichardo was terrified after being harassed and urinated on herself to avoid going to the bathroom. Jailers did not realize the mistake until Pichardo’s family investigated her location with the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. The all-male jail where Pichardo was residing did a full physical examination and guess what: Pichardo was revealed to be female. What a mess!
Even though it’s the holidays, I strongly believe all staff who led to this grave mistake should be fired immediately. Yet, since this is the most backwards story in the world, that won’t happen. A federal judge threw out Pichardo’s lawsuit, saying the jail staffers were protected from a trial for negligence! Outrageous! There may be some justice, however, as a federal appeals court reinstated the lawsuit against the jail doctor and nurse at Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, who insisted officers book Pichardo as a man- even though a strip search proved her to be a biological woman.
