ABC took only a couple of hours to cancel Roseanne Barr's titular show today after she made a hateful tweet about Valerie Jarrett, a former Obama aide, calling her the offspring of the “Muslim Brotherhood & Planet of the Apes.”
It was their top rated show of the year (averaging 20 million viewers a week, which is almost unheard of in the world of primetime television today), and now it begs the question of what the network will do now with that empty time slot.
The 90's have been incredibly popular as of late, with shows like Roseanne, Will & Grace, Murphy Brown and more all getting a reboot in recent years. Why not keep this trend going with five other shows from the decade that was (with some great music to boot), that could potentially fill the Roseanne gap come fall?
Take a look at five shows, many of which had an LGBT theme, that we would love to see back on the small screen again.
My So-Called Life (1994-1995)
The mid-90's teen drama was criminally canceled by ABC back in 1995… so maybe this could be there way of making nice? This is all hypothetical, as Claire Danes is pregnant in real life and Jared Leto is an Oscar winner and all, but it would be amazing to see what happened to these characters over 20 years later, notably Rickie, played by Wilson Cruz, whose role as a gay teenager was a pivotal one in terms of visibility for the LGBTQ community.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997-2003)
The cult classic ended on a hopeful note for reluctant hero Buffy (Sarah Michelle Gellar) after six years, so is there anyway possible that we can see what many of these characters are up to now all this time later?
Dawson's Creek (1998-2003)
The cast just did a 20 year reunion photo shoot recently, which sparked rumors that a reboot could potentially happen. The show, which catapulted the careers of its stars (Michelle Williams, James Van Der Beek, Katie Holmes, Joshua Jackson) was a major hit for the WB, and introduced us to one of the first same-sex kisses on primetime television when Jack McPhee (Kerr Smith) planted one on Ethan (Adam Kaufman).
Sex and the City (1998-2004)
The third movie isn't happening, The Carrie Diaries failed… however, in an alternate universe, it would be fun to see what Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker), Miranda (Cynthia Nixon), Charlotte (Kristin Davis) and Samantha (Kim Cattrall) are up to almost ten years after the last movie (sadly) was released. Sure, in real life Cynthia is running for Governor of New York, Kim isn't really fond of Sarah, Sarah has another show on the air and Kristin seems to be doing other things, but, what would life be like for the four of them now if they did just one more season of the show that made Manolo Blahniks and Magnolia Bakery cupcakes an absolute staple when you visited The Big Apple?
Supermarket Sweep (1990-1995)
OK, this might be a silly choice… but they are bringing all these old game shows back for primetime (at least during the summer), and Supermarket Sweep was the peanut butter to my jelly back in the early 90's. Who doesn't want to run through a gigantic supermarket to win thousands of dollars? And don't ever get the Manager's Special, I always found that to be a bogus prize that did nothing in the end. Other than that… Sign. Me. Up.
