One of the most profound events occurring in New York City for WorldPride month is an exciting new production of “Quilt – a Musical Celebration.” Tickets are going fast with just four performances only, Friday, June 21st through Sunday, June 23rd. The limited show run coincides with NYC Pride’s initiative with community leaders to display portions of The AIDS Memorial Quilt throughout the city.
“Quilt – a Musical Celebration” is an uplifting and poignant story that celebrates and remembers both those who died from AIDS and those who have survived or been left behind. The musical is living history for a new generation, to whom the AIDS epidemic is entirely foreign. Ultimately, the more critical message the show conveys is one of optimism and hope, as the quilt itself is exemplary of making something beautiful out of a terrible circumstance.
Nearly 2000 square feet of the AIDS Memorial Quilt are presented in the production, including some famous panels as well that pay homage to stars such as Liberace, Freddy Mercury, and rapper Eazy-E. In fact, the show features the largest installation of the quilt at Pride, and according to some, its the largest in NYC in over a decade.
100% of proceeds benefit the Callen-Lorde Community Health Center and Frontline AIDS, which, together, treat nearly 3 million people a year for HIV/AIDS locally and around the world. The bitter-sweet musical takes on the complicated subject matters of love and loss, with honesty, compassion and respectful, bright spots of humor along the way.
“Quilt – a Musical Celebration,” stars Billboard #1 recording artist, Diana DeGarmo who had great success in recent Broadway productions of Hair and Hairspray. Co-starring is Andrew Leeds, a cult favorite on the hit TV show, Bones and Broadway’s Falsettos and Teddy & Alice.
