Lil Nas X is one week away from breaking a record that began almost 24 years ago in December 1995.
His song, “Old Town Road,” is now tied with Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men’s “One Sweet Day” and Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s (Featuring Justin Bieber) “Despacito” as the longest-running number one single in Billboard Hot 100 history. Each song has now ruled the top spot for sixteen weeks apiece.
The breakout music star of 2019 broke another record last week when “OTR” became the longest-running number one single held by an openly gay male. He previously tied that honor with Elton John’s “Candle In The Wind 1997/Something About The Way You Look Tonight” when both songs were at the 14-week mark.
Several “OTR” remixes have been produced since the original featuring Billy Ray Cyrus was released. Young Thug, Mason Ramsey, Diplo and more have been featured on them that has helped the track stay in the pole position for almost four months.
Lil Nas, 20, recently teased another remix of “OTR” with fellow upcoming rapper Megan Thee Stallion and country legend Dolly Parton. The “Jolene” songstress appeared to confirm those rumors when she shared the song’s art work with a pink horse added in.
“OTR” topped the charts before Lil Nas came out as gay on June 30, 2019, which also happens to be the last day of Pride month. He has received a ton of support from fans and celebs alike in the days since, notably NBA legend Dennis Rodman and hip-hop star Cardi B.
