Law & Order: SVU is doing what it knows best. Imitating life.

The crime show has been known to mimic real-life crime stories for years now. Season 14 saw an episode mimicking Chris Brown’s assault of Rihanna in “Funny Valentine,” season 18 copied the Brock Turner rape case in “Rape Interrupted,” and season 19 tried to reimagine the Gypsy Rose Blanchard case in “Pathological.”

So it really is no surprise to us that the latest episode of season 21 titled “Down Low in Hell’s Kitchen” tried to imitate the complex and confusing case revolving around Empire actor Jussie Smollett.

At the start of this year, Smollett claimed he was the victim of a hate crime attack by two men wearing MAGA hats while walking around Chicago in the early morning.

The Chicago Police Department later determined that Smollett’s claim was false. Two Nigerian brothers who met Smollett on the set of Empire also claimed that they faked the attack under the direction of Smollett. Smollett was then charged with disorderly conduct, but those charges were dropped with just the punishment of a simple fine and some community service. (Oh, and there was also the forgotten add-on of hate mail doused in a mysterious white power…)

Now, it seems that NBC’s Law & Order: SVU tackled their own version of the story last night (October 10) in what NBC described as “When a celebrity is attacked, his story becomes a national obsession.”

In response to the episode, it seems that Twitter users have a general reaction. They loved it.
