The management of Lexington, Virginia restaurant The Red Hen gave Sarah Huckabee Sanders the boot… on moral grounds.
The White House Press Secretary and seven of her family members were asked to leave the restaurant on Friday, reports TMZ.
A waiter at The Red Hen said,”I just served Sarah Huckabee Sanders for a total of 2 minutes before my owner kicked her out.”
The management didn’t want the Trump staffer in the establishment due to “moral conviction.”
Sanders’ father, one-time Republican presidential nominee and occasional guitar enthusiast Mike Huckabee tweeted today:
"Bigotry. On the menu at Red Hen Restaurant in Lexington VA. Or you can ask for the ‘Hate Plate’. And appetizers are ‘small plates for small minds.’”
Sanders tweeted: "Last night I was told by the owner of Red Hen in Lexington, VA to leave because I work for @POTUS and I politely left. Her actions say far more about her than about me. I always do my best to treat people, including those I disagree with, respectfully and will continue to do so.”
Just earlier this week, Trump’s Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen was asked to leave a Mexican restaurant near The White House.
On a personal note for this writer, this all reminds me of an incident six years ago in my hometown of Knoxville, TN, when restaurant owner Martha Boggs became a local hero for booting outrageously homophobic Republican Senator Stacey Campfield from her establishment, The Bistro by the Bijou. Campfield was a Sunday regular, but one day Boggs decided she’d had enough after reading about his political shenanigans in the news.
Campfield was a sponsor of the “Don’t Say Gay” bill in Tennessee, which was intended to make it against the law to discuss homosexuality in public schools. Campfield also said that it was “virtually impossible” to transmit HIV via heterosexual sex and that gays die at a younger age.
When Boggs gave Campfield the heave-ho, it reached international news outlets, and you couldn’t get a table at the Bistro for months. To this day, it remains incredibly popular.
On that note—let’s all go out and have dinner at The Red Hen, shall we?

Though I agree with the owner’s point of view, and did not loose sleep over the incident, I also find it a dangerous precedent.

So, it's ok not to bake a cake for a gay couple, but throw Trump's spokesperson out and you are a bigot. If this isn't the definition of a "double standard".
