As if 100 degree weather wasn’t enough at this year’s Coachella Music and Arts Festival, the crowds couldn’t stop sweating with last night’s historic performance by none other than Beyoncé. Queen Bey is the first black woman to headline Coachella, which she acknowledged at the beginning of her set. She had been scheduled to headline last year’s festival, but had to postpone because of her pregnancy. Nevertheless, the wait was well worth it!
If you were part of the millions who tuned in through the Coachella screening on YouTube, you got served a 2-hour concert that rocked the previous indie music festival into what is now being dubbed Beychella.
Beyoncé popped, locked, danced, and sang the house down with over 100 backup dancers in formation, a huge marching band, and special performances with husband Jay-Z, sister Solange, and a surprise reunion with soul sisters Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams for a Destiny’s Child revival that SHOOK the beyhive!
With a set that started with Crazy in Love and ended with Love on Top, Beyoncé paid homage to civil rights and the black power movement in her wardrobe, with projections, and in spoken word presentation. Malcolm X and Nina Simone were alive and well with Bey on stage.
Beyoncé’s iconic entrance as an African queen will resonate as one of the most powerful moments in Coachella history.
