New reports are coming in to remind us that Brazil has the most recorded incidents of violence towards LGBTQ people in the world.
The numbers in question come from a report by Grupo Gay de Bahia and they state that in 2017 there were 387 homicides dude to homophobia/transphobia. This is a 30% increase from the 327 deaths in 2016. In addition the report also says that there were 58 suicides in 2017.
While many of us say we want to visit Brazil, like when that video of the four men making out at a festival parade broke out, many of us forget how dangerous Brazil is for LGBTQ people.
While having marriage equality, legal recognition of trans people, and multiple festivals/parade where all kinds of fun happens, Brazil simultaneously is world renown for its anit-gay violence. In fact, the country makes up 40% of the worlds recorded incidents of anti-LGBTQ violence.
We've reported on multiple incidents of violence and anti-gay rhetoric in Brazil.
For instance, a teenager was stabbed and buried by his own mother last January because he was gay.
Brazil’s court system ruled in favor of conversion therapy back in September.
And a gay homeless man was burned alive while he slept in an empty parking lot at the end of the year.
All of this is to say that we should always remember just how dangerous Brazil can be for LGBTQ people. Don’t let its good side make you forget the bad.
