If there is one thing Billy Porter has never been accused of, it is being boring.

The actor has built an entire career around authenticity, fearless self expression, and saying exactly what’s on his mind. Now, after surviving a terrifying health emergency, Porter is embracing life with renewed energy and an even sharper sense of humor.
In June, the 56-year-old star revealed that he is enjoying his new lease on life following a near-fatal battle with urosepsis in September 2025. The severe bloodstream infection originated from his urinary tract and became so serious that Porter spent time in intensive care on advanced life support. The medical crisis forced him to step away from his role in Cabaret, leaving fans shocked and concerned.
Today, however, Porter is back where he belongs: center stage.
A Triumphant Return

The actor is currently starring as Albin opposite Wayne Brady’s Georges in Robert O’Hara’s highly anticipated all-Black revival of La Cage aux Folles at New York City Center. For theater fans, the production represents one of the most exciting queer events of the year. For Porter, it also marks an emotional comeback after months of recovery.
The legendary performer has spoken openly about how grateful he feels to still be here, making every rehearsal and every performance feel a little sweeter. Of course, being Billy Porter means heartfelt reflections often arrive alongside delightfully candid stories.

While appearing in the documentary Finding Fire Island, Porter took viewers on a nostalgic trip through queer life before dating apps dominated everything. Recalling his younger years, Billy discussed navigating sex and relationships during an era when meeting people required a lot more effort than simply opening an app.
“I called a couple of escorts from HX,” Porter admitted, referencing the iconic New York gay publication that was a staple of queer culture in the 1990s and early 2000s. Porter explained that during the height of the AIDS crisis, many gay men operated under widespread misconceptions about HIV transmission. As a result, some men adopted sexual roles they believed would reduce risk.
For years, the actor identified primarily as a top. But by age 30, he was ready to broaden his horizons.
“And I didn’t really know where to go, and I wanted a professional,” he recalled with a laugh. “I had to hire a professional to teach me how to bottom.”
Never one to leave a room speechless without enjoying the moment, Billy followed up with the perfect punchline: “Don’t ask me questions you don’t want the answers to, honey!”
Still One of a Kind
The story quickly made waves online, not because it was scandalous, but because it was peak Billy Porter: funny, honest, self aware, and completely unafraid to tell the truth about his experiences.
Whether he is discussing recovery, Broadway, queer history, or the realities of dating before smartphones, Porter continues to remind audiences why he remains one of the most beloved voices in LGBTQ+ entertainment.
After everything he has overcome, one thing is clear: Billy Porter is back, thriving, and still delivering the kind of unforgettable stories only he can tell.
