The latest trailer for Maleficent: Mistress of Evil is out and we have some questions.
With Hollywood movies being overrun with live-action takes, remakes, and comic book adaptions, there are a lot of changes being made to beloved characters. And, there’s plenty of controversy around those changes. (I’m sure you’re already thinking of last week’s development). And now the latest trailer for Maleficent 2, we see even more changes being made to the iconic Disney villain.
The first Maleficent film saw our dark fairy being depicted as a misunderstood anti-hero and devoted adoptive mother. And it appears the second film will expand on that concept even more.
The trailer below shows Sleeping Beauty herself, Aurora, getting engaged with her prince. They then prepare for their wedding. But in a Monster In-Laws fashion, Angelina Jolie’s Maleficent and Michelle Pfeiffer’s Queen Ingrith don’t get along. In fact, they end up starting a war because of their petty squabbling.
You can watch the trailer below.
While the film seems fairly tame for the most part, it’s the end that’s rather shocking. There are more Maleficent people walking around? This is a new twist and turn for the character and film series than ever seen before. But is it a good thing or a bad one?
Does changing the character’s backstory this way effectively change the character too much? Has Angelina Jolie’s need to make the character her own gone too far?
