Polyamorous people, gather your partners because we’ve got some good news! West Hollywood has just made a major move toward recognizing relationships that don’t follow the traditional couple formula. And honestly, it’s about time the law started catching up with how some people actually live and love.

As first reported by the Los Angeles Times, West Hollywood has approved a new system that lets people in multi-partner relationships officially record their partnerships with the city. That’s right: your relationship doesn’t have to be a two-person production to receive some recognition.

Three Is No Longer a Crowd

If you’ve been scrolling through dating apps lately, you’ve probably encountered terms like “ethically non-monogamous” or “polyamorous.” Perhaps you’ve wondered what they mean before swiping away. Well, here’s a reason to pay attention.

Polyamory means having romantic relationships with more than one person, with everyone involved aware of and consenting to the arrangement. It’s not about sneaking around or collecting partners like trading cards. It’s about honesty, communication, and creating relationships that work for everyone.

For some, that also means building a family with more than two adults. Think shared homes, parenting responsibilities, emotional support, and all the everyday chaos that comes with making a life together.

The problem? Many existing laws and services still operate as though every household consists of one couple and possibly their children. That can leave people in polyamorous relationships dealing with unnecessary complications when it comes to housing, healthcare, and other important matters.

West Hollywood is taking a step toward changing that.

What Does the New Law Actually Do?

Introduced by Mayor John Heilman, the ordinance creates a way for groups of at least three people to put their relationship on the city’s official record. Applicants must meet certain conditions, including confirming that everyone is consenting and that the partners aren’t related by blood.

So what does that actually mean outside the paperwork?

Registered partners will receive certain local protections, including the ability to visit one another in healthcare facilities and jails within the city’s jurisdiction. The measure also provides rental protections, which is highly necessary for any relationship, helping prevent a landlord from ending or refusing to renew a lease simply because someone’s registered partner continues living in the property.

Now, before anyone starts planning a wedding for three, there’s an important distinction: this isn’t marriage, nor does it provide all the legal benefits of a state-recognized domestic partnership. The protections are narrower and apply within the city’s authority.

Still, it’s a welcome development.

A Bigger Idea of What Family Can Be

Christina Fialho, founder of bisexual media advocacy group Rewrite the BiLine, helped bring the idea of polyamorous relationship protections to West Hollywood officials. Speaking to the Los Angeles Times, she described the ordinance as a starting point that could help people imagine futures they once considered impossible.

And that’s the bigger picture. Relationships don’t all look alike, families don’t all follow the same blueprint, and people shouldn’t have to squeeze their lives into someone else’s definition of what love is supposed to be.

West Hollywood hasn’t fixed every legal challenge facing polyamorous families, but it’s certainly giving them something to celebrate. Love comes in many forms, and perhaps the law is finally starting to notice.
