Get your Manolo Blahnik’s on, meet your girlfriends at Bungalow 8 and sip on some Cosmopolitans, because Sex and the City is back… sort of.
Deadline reported on Wednesday, March 27, that a follow-up series is in the works based on SATC author Candace Bushnell‘s new novel Is There Still Sex in the City?
Paramount Television and Anonymous Content have landed the rights to Candace’s latest book, which is scheduled to be published this August. It looks at sex, dating and friendship after age 50 in New York.
Don’t expect this to be a continuation of SATC though. Bushnell’s nonfiction book looks at the love and dating habits of middle-aged men and women on Manhattan’s Upper East Side and in a country enclave known as The Village.
“It didn’t used to be this way. At one time, fifty-something meant the beginning of retirement — working less, spending more time on your hobbies, with your friends, who like you were sliding into a more leisurely lifestyle,” Bushnell said Wednesday in a statement.
“In short, retirement-age folks weren’t meant to do much of anything but get older and a bit heavier. They weren’t expected to exercise, start new business ventures, move to a different state, have casual sex with strangers, and start all over again. But this is exactly what the lives of a lot of fifty- and sixty-something women look like today, and I’m thrilled to be reflecting the rich, complexity of their reality on the page and now on the screen.”
Sex and the City was a massive hit on HBO from 1998 to 2004. It won several Emmy and Golden Globe Awards throughout its duration on the air and earned widespread acclaim from critics and fans alike.
The television series spawned two movies, Sex and the City (2008) and Sex and the City 2 (2010). The first film received mixed reviews but was a gigantic commercial success however the second one bombed on both aspects. A third film was announced in December 2016 but was scrapped months later.
