Tequila Might Actually Help You Lose Weight.

When it comes to what drinks are good for YOU personally, most know which ones to stay away from, which ones you can drink all night, and which ones put you out of commission for the next two days.  Dark liquors or clear liquors, fruity or pure octane, some alcohols are supposedly better for you health wise than others. This time around, we are learning that one of my favorite alcohols can help you lose weight.  Tequila is a wonderful thing!

Well, isn’t this a marvelous thing? According to a 2014 study by the American Chemical Society (ACS), sugars found in the plant that makes tequila could lower blood glucose levels for people with type 2 diabetes, and help obese people lose weight, researchers say. According to the study, Agavins, a natural form of sugar found in the agave plant, are non-digestible and can act as a dietary fiber, so they would not raise blood glucose. They are different from the commonly known agave syrup, which is actually very similar to the dangerous high-fructose corn syrup.

"We have found that since agavins reduce glucose levels and increase GLP-1, they also increase the amount of insulin," said Mercedes G. López, Ph.D and one of the researchers. GLP-1 is a hormone that slows the stomach from emptying, and stimulates production of insulin. "Agavins are not expensive and they have no known side effects, except for those few people who cannot tolerate them," López added. Pretty much what agavins do is help people feel fuller, which could lead them to eat less.

To prove that, scientists fed mice a standard diet, and added agavins to some of their water. They discovered that the mice who consumed agavins ate less overall and had lower blood glucose levels. The effects were stronger than other artificial sweeteners like aspartame and agave syrup. The mice consuming agavins also produced the GLP-1 hormone. Although we’re not telling you to go drink tequila like there’s no tomorrow, at least now you won’t feel as guilty after that extra shot you shouldn’t have had! – latintimes.com

So how ever you take your tequila, a shot, on the rocks, splash of sprite, or mixed with Diet Mountain Dew (yeah, I said Diet Mountain Dew, you gotta try it), it sounds like tequila is a good thing, just stay away from the worm.

I'm not a big fan of Patron or any of the more pricey ones, but as well stay away from the speed rack / house tequilas.  I recommend Hornito's Sausa or Sausa Silver.

If you can handle tequila, what's your favorite?

  2. Hornitos Reposado with salt

Hornitos Reposado with salt and lemon, or in the rocks with Squirt, a pinch of coarse salt and lemon juice. That makes the traditional Mexican "Paloma" (White Dove). It's like a margarita but smother and faster to make! Also try the "Cuba" (not the country, just the drink) or "Charro Negro": Ice cubes, Tequila (to taste) and Coke/Pepsi and a squirt of lemon juice if you feel it. There you have the most traditional mix drinks we have in Mexico, made with Tequila. Soooooo good!!

ps: The best tequila I've found (and a great deal) is at TJ's. Not Tijuana. Zapopan Reposado. THE BEST.
