What is Dating Sunday and why do singles and companies care?
The New Year has come and that means its time for changes in our lives. From jumping back into the gym to starting diets, taking breaks from alcohol, and more. There are many changes in the air. But apparently, the world of romance and dating sees a big change too. And funny enough, that biggest change is about to happen tomorrow.
According to USAToday, the first Sunday of January is known as Dating Sunday. This is because there’s a noticeable increase in activity on dating apps and programs on this day. It appears that many people are looking to start the New Year with a pursuit of love.
“You have people recovering from a breakup or who were down during the holidays, you have all those New Year’s resolutions, and you have the clock ticking down to Valentine’s Day,” said cyber-dating expert Julie Spira. “It’s the first lonely holiday after the New Year.”
Online dating platform Match (formerly Match.com) predicts that it will see an 80% increase in single people using the program this Sunday. Dating app Zoosk says there was a 15% increase in likes sent through their program during last year’s Dating Sunday. In addition, they say there was a 17% increase in messages sent and an 18% increase in sent smiles. Coffee Meets Bagel, Tinder, and Bumble also saw similar traffic during this time of year.
“Dating Sunday falls during a time period when singles are extra motivated to look for online connections,” says Zoosk CMO Luciana Telles. “It’s the first weekend after New Year’s Eve, which means that people have not only set themselves New Year’s resolutions, they’ve had a few days to think about how to put them into practice. Additionally, it’s about 6 weeks out from Valentine’s Day, meaning that singles who spark something on Jan 5 have plenty of time left to lock down a date for Feb 14.”
But what about gay apps? Unfortunately, apps like Grindr, Jack’d, and Scruff haven’t shared any info concerning this matter. But seeing as so many other dating apps are experiencing this increase in activity, it’s safe to guess gay apps are getting a similar boost too.
So for singles out there who want to date and find a boo, it looks like your time has come. Tomorrow is the first Sunday of January and it might be the opportunity needed to put yourself out there. More people will be looking for love on this coming Dating Sunday, so why not join them?
Just remember to put your best foot forward. Consider updating your pictures, switching up your bio, and adding more info to your profile’s data. Then you know you’ll be putting yourself at your best this coming Dating Sunday. Good luck!
