Louis van Amstel’s son is making us proud.
Last month, we shared with you the unfortunate news of Daniel van Amstel. Daniel is an 11-year-old fifth-grader who was given an unfortunate shock by a visiting teacher at his school. The student living in Utah was asked by his substitute teacher what he was thankful for. Daniel responded that he was thankful for his two fathers, one of whom is coincidentally celebrity choreographer and So You Think You Can Dance regular Louis van Amstel. The teacher then told Daniel he shouldn’t be proud of that.
Many of Daniel’s classmates stood up for him in that moment. They then got the attention of the school’s faculty and administration. This led to the firing of this homophobic substitute teacher.
Now, Daniel has opened up about the moment with the world through a tv interview with CBS. In the interview, which you can watch below, Daniel explained that he was upset at the hateful words shared by the substitute teacher.
“I was very mad,” said Daniel, “Because it isn’t — it’s not right — nice to insult other families, even if you don’t like them. If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say it.”
But as he sat next to his two fathers, who officially adopted him earlier this month, Daniel shared that he loves his dads. He also shared his up-to-date thoughts for the substitute teacher, “I would tell her, ‘You should have made better choices in life.’”
