Trixie Mattel is arguably the hardest working drag queen in show business.
Not many have been able to accomplish what she has since making her debut on RuPaul’s Drag Race in 2015. The Wisconsin native has put out multiple chart-topping albums, excelled in the world of YouTube with her hit show UNHhhh (costarring fellow season 7 fan favorite Katya) and scored a win on the third season of All Stars in 2018.
The sky appears to be the limit for Trixie, 30, as she’s now diving deep into the beauty industry with her first ever line of cosmetics called Trixie Cosmetics. The colorfully dressed and painted queen talked about her latest business venture and so much more at RuPaul’s DragCon in New York City on Friday, September 6.
Trixie also chatted with Instinct about her love of bears (YAY!), why she feels she’s the Mickey Mouse of Drag Race and thoughts on her fellow RPDR brethren being bitter about their careers after their season ended.
Tell us about your fabulous cosmetics line (as if you don’t have enough going on as is).
Yas! Championing the folk music world wasn’t enough for me. I also have a cosmetics line now! After years of working in cosmetics for other companies I get to create my own products now. We have a line of glitters and lipsticks that are affordably priced and great quality for the masses to enjoy.
So, you’re like the drag version of Rihanna now?
Yes. I’m Jeffree Star but in synthetic wigs… not human.
Let’s talk Drag Race, which has now ventured north to Canada and across the pond to the UK. What are your thoughts on that?
That’s wild huh? I know some of the UK queens like Blu Hydrangea and everyone knows Divina De Campo. I’m excited for Drag Race UK. I got the mews to celebrate.
Do you still care about being attached to world of Drag Race?
Of course! Why do you think I’m even here?
Let me rephrase. Does it feel like you’re still trapped it in and feel like you can’t move forward?
No, not at all. A lot of these drag queens get bitter because they still get recognized from Drag Race cuz no one recognizes what they currently do. But my music and makeup and everything is so positively received, it all feels like putting ornaments on my Drag Race tree. That’s why I go to every single DragCon because I’m very proud to be the Mickey Mouse of Drag Race.
Were you happy with how season 11 turned out?
Uhh… yeah! It was great. The finale was so cool. I’d be proud to lose to any of them. Who cares, you know? In All Stars, if I had lost to Bebe (Zahara Benet) or Kennedy (Davenport) or Shangela, ok yeah. It’s fine with me. You must be secure with yourself and then losing feels like whatever.
So, you’re dating a bear. This makes me, a bear, happy to hear.
I don’t know if he’s a bear but he’s definitely chubby. And I’m always like, “Listen if you’re looking for a boyfriend to shame you, I don’t care.” You can be chubby, I don’t care, as long as you still feel good about yourself, that’s what matters.
By the way, I love performing for bears. Bears are the most fun audiences. I always sell out whenever I do my show during Bear Week in Provincetown, Massachusetts. And I love dating them as well, especially the ones that wear those CPAP masks.
