Billy Porter gave yet another LGBTQ State of the Union and we loved it!
Looks like when he’s not hanging out on Sesame Street, the Pose actor is getting official in front of another type of podium. Specifically, Logo posted its second annual “LGBTQ State of the Union” starring Porter. Together, Porter and the Logo shared messages of continual community and strength in the face of Donald Trump’s America.
“Last year, I told you that the state of our union is strong,” Porter said to start the speech. “While it certainly has been battered, our union is far from broken. Now, in 2020, our responsibility as citizens has been more evident.”
From there, Porter urged viewers to take action this year by voting in order to correct “one of the biggest crises of my lifetime.” Porter then goes into talking about Donald Trump and his administration’s offenses against LGBTQ people. This included the ban on transgender military service people, the administration’s influence on anti-LGBTQ violence, furthering of religious freedoms to excuse discrimination, and more.
“Donald J. Trump has painted himself as a friend of the LGBTQ community while revealing his true colors at every malicious turn,” Porter added. “This heinous violence against trans people, which disproportionately affects trans women of color is nothing short of an epidemic. We must confront it as a community and as a country, and we must elect officials who recognize it for the crisis that it is.”
Porter didn’t stop at just talking about the effects made in the USA, however. The speech then went on to talk about homophobia and hate spreading to other communities and countries. Though, Porter made sure to talk about good changes like the legalization of same-sex marriage in Taiwan, Ecuador, and Northern Ireland.
“We are witnessing true progress,” he says. “Even in the darkest moments, humanity will find the light and shine bright. The category is living our best lives, on and off-screen.”
