Anti-Donald Trump Protests Continue for Third Night in More Than 17 States. Can They Make A Difference? YES!

America is in unrest and we don't think it will end with the victors telling the losers to STFU.  What we are seeing across the United States once again are people taking their feelings to the street.  Protest is how we built this country, protected this country, and changed this country.

For a third night since Donald Trump was elected the 45th president, anti-Trump protests have erupted with thousands marching from every corner of the country.

On Friday, protests were scheduled in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Denver, Greensboro, Honolulu, Indianapolis, Omaha, Orlando and Washington D.C among others.

Once again, one of the largest crowds in the nation congregated outside Trump Tower in New York City. On Wednesday evening, thousands gathered near Trump Tower while the president-elect was meeting with aides. And on Thursday night, there were protests in front of Trump’s Manhattan home.

In Portland, protestors vandalized 19 cars at a dealership, according to local reports. The incident comes less than 24 hours after 25 people were arrested during a riot that began with 4,000 protesters peacefully exercising their right to speak out.

And in Miami, hundreds marched up to I-395 and shut down traffic on the highway, according to the Miami Police Department.

States including Iowa, Maine, New Hampshire, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas and Vermont also held consecutive nights of protests.

In addition to the anti-Trump protests, there have been reports of racially charged incidents in schools and communities across the country.

Trump addressed the nationwide reactions in a series of tweets on Thursday, writing in the first, “Just had a very open and successful presidential election. Now professional protesters, incited by the media, are protesting. Very unfair!”

More protests and peaceful demonstrations have been planned for Saturday in Cincinnati, Indianapolis, Las Vegas, Los Angeles,  New York City and Salt Lake City among others.

Meanwhile, the Ku Klux Klan recently announced that it plans to hold a victory rally on Dec. 3 in North Carolina to celebrate Trump’s win. – people.com

Before we view more footage and pictures of the protests, we should actually talk about how these protests could actually change something.

So who is seeing all of these protests?  What are they good for?  Are protesters doing this to just prove a point or do they think they can actually make a difference?  Is there an end game?  We can't just protest our way to a new president … or can we?  The right people need to be swayed by these acts and those people are … the Electoral College and the members of the Congress.

Change.org has started a petition that you can read over at their site about the first group of citizens that need to hear the protests.

On December 19, the Electors of the Electoral College will cast their ballots. If they all vote the way their states voted, Donald Trump will win. However, they can vote for Hillary Clinton if they choose. Even in states where that is not allowed, their vote would still be counted, they would simply pay a small fine – which we can be sure Clinton supporters will be glad to pay!

We are calling on the Electors to ignore their states' votes and cast their ballots for Secretary Clinton. Why?

24 states bind electors. If electors vote against their party, they usually pay a fine. And people get mad. But they can vote however they want and there is no legal means to stop them in most states. – change.org

NYPost.com elaborated on what needs to happen, if anything could happen to get Hillary into the White House.  They'll mention the Electoral College again, but also bring in Congress.

For die-hard Democrats holding out hope that they won’t have to live through a Trump presidency, there is a last, incredibly long shot for them latch on to — a surprise twist in the Electoral College.

Though Hillary Clinton won the popular vote by 200,000, Trump has won the minimum of 270 electoral votes necessary to be elected president. As of late Wednesday, he had 290 to Clinton’s 228.

According to the Constitution, chosen electors of the Electoral College are the real people who will vote for president, when they meet on Dec. 19 in their respective state capitals.

However, there is technically nothing stopping any of the electors from voting their conscience and refusing to support the candidate to whom they were bound, or from abstaining from voting altogether.

There’s even a name for it: becoming a “faithless elector.”

The idea of electors reversing their vote is rarely discussed — and was most recently bandied about after the incredibly close 2000 election in which George Bush narrowly beat Al Gore. And electors going “faithless” is exceedingly rare.

Well over 99 percent of electors throughout American history have voted as pledged, according to an analysis done by the New York Times.

It does happen, though.

The last faithless elector reared his roguish head back in 2004, when a lone anonymous voter in Minnesota declined to vote for Democrat John Kerry and instead voted for Kerry’s running mate, John Edwards.

The rogue’s vote was purely ceremonial, as Bush already had 286 electoral votes, more than enough to ensure his reelection.

Faithless electors are technically barred in only 29 states from ignoring the will of the voters, though the penalties are light. And a faithless elector has never swung an election.

But given the high dissatisfaction with Trump among Republicans, a few faithless GOP electors could well go rogue next month.

One Texas GOP elector, Chris Suprun of Texas, a firefighter, told Politico in August that he finds Trump so unpalatable he’d consider voting for Clinton on Dec. 19th.

Baoky Vu, a Decatur businessman, told the Atlanta-based news site AJC.com in August that he couldn’t stomach voting for Trump either, and was quietly convinced by local GOP leaders to resign as an elector.

Clinton would need more than 20 GOP electors to go rogue and vote instead for her — a mighty tall order.

Even then, the new, Republican-controlled Congress meets Jan. 6 to approve the electoral college vote, and would certainly vote to void any roguery, handing the victory firmly back to Trump.

The Founding Fathers created the electoral college because the were “afraid of direct Democracy,” according to FactCheck.org.

In fact, Alexander Hamilton thought the electors would make sure “the office of President will never fall to the lot of any man who is not in an eminent degree endowed with the requisite qualifications.”

It remains to be seen, given Tuesday’s surprise election result, whether Democrats — and even some Republicans — who question the “requisite qualifications” of president-elect Donald Trump will push to revisit the Electoral College system. – NYPost.com

So it looks like Electors and Congress need to have a solid 'constitution' and vote Hillary in, if we are wanting to see change. Will all of these protests make a difference?  Will they continue until December 19th? Your guess is as good as mine.  Maybe we should have some more chatter about these electors.

  1. I agree with those who say we

I agree with those who say we need to give him a chance, but I agree more with those who believe we should keep him on a tight leach and major choke collars. Even if we do think the electoral college system needs to go, there is no reason to doubt the validity of the results so protesting won't do a thing, and before Trimp supporters get on too high a horse, we would probably have militia groups taking to the streets if Clinton won and that would be far more dangerous. My guess, he will some good things for business and trade, issues championed by Elizabeth Warren long before Trump, but he will not please his Tea Party base, he won't be able to build his wall, and he will not get rid of Washington insiders. In the end, if he finishes his term, it will be viewed as a failure by most of his supporters. My hope, the 2020 campaign starts soon with a moderate who unifies liberals and conservatives in a way that does not happen by selling out either side.
