The tv show the Leftovers just ended this week. And since the spotlight was on him, the co-creator Damon Lindelof took a moment to talk about a passionate topic of his. Male nudity.
And as he told TVLine, this is something he's noticed in the tv entertainment business for years and he wants it to change.
“There’s an incredible disproportion between naked women and naked men on television.”
“And if you’re going to do a show on HBO, which is one of the few places where you can do full frontal nudity, there’s no excuse not to show more dongs. I’m passionate about it.”
“The audience still has a very odd reaction to seeing male genitalia, yet when they see female genitalia or naked breasts, they’re completely nonchalant about it.
“So I’m just the beginning of the vanguard, but I want to normalize male nudity on television.”
I totally and full-heartedly agree, but I also caution that we want a wide variety of the depiction of the male body.
Everything is good with variety, and depictions of the male body are the same.
Sexual scenes, dudes just hanging out in their bare essentials, and normal scenarios when a guy's naked but that has nothing to do with the story of the scene. All are good.
But, if you want to hear my full personal thoughts on the topic, head over to this Gay Pop Buzz article.
