So what does Smollett say about that?

Jussie, he is gay, and he’s very committed to issues around the LGBT community. He and I have a very close relationship,' Yoba tells Black Film.

But Smollett isn't saying.

'I am not willing to confirm or deny anything,' he said in a recent interview with Sway in the Morning.

'I live my life…if anyone is looking to put me in a box, then that’s not going to happen. But if you really want to know about me, just watch, because I don’t hide anything. I just don’t choose to talk about my personal life.'

So is the show mirroring Jussie Smollett's personal life?

Smollett stated during the interview was that the show should not be pigeonholed into a gay or black or music show.  It is more than that.  "This is not a gay black show, this is a show about human experiences."

Listen to the exchange that occurs at 5:35 in the video below about his and the character's similarities.  Is Jussie's "I don't care" answer the correct one?

Another great quote from the interview – "I don't hide anything. I just don't choose to talk about my personal life."

I think Jussie's quote about the show is a statement about himself and how he wants to be perceived. He's more than a gay man, or a black man, or even a musician.

Whatever he is besides human, it doesn't really matter.  He has my respect and my attention.  Keep going strong Jussie and EMPIRE.  I'll be watching.

On last week's episode of the Fox breakout hit Empire, the gay character of Jamal Lyon sung his way out of the closet in a dramatic performance.

Now Jussie Smollett, the actor who plays Jamal, is being outed as gay by co-star Malik Yoba.

  1. I’d agree with him that
I’d agree with him that Empire shouldn’t be labeled as a gay black show because people of all types can relate to the show. What I don’t agree with is his decision to answer the question. I hate when closeted people say that won’t talk about their personal life because that’s a cop out. Nobody’s asking who he’s sleeping with or if he even has a boyfriend. Homophobia is rampant in the black community and I feel that his coming out might serve to not only lessen that homophobia but also serve has an inspiration for others in the black community, especially black men, to come out.
