Is it your dream to be in porn? It seems every time I go to the local Publix here in Wilton Manors, I run into a well known star of adult films. Most of them still look pretty good in person, too. If you don't have what it takes to be in porn, what about being on the other side of the camera.
Cosmopolitan's Sex Work column, a weekly series that profiles women who have careers in sex-related industries — from porn stars to sex researchers and everyone in between, recently focused on a female gay porn director. Here's a couple of excerpts from her / Mr. Pam's story.
Mr. Pam, 42, has been filming and directing gay male porn for over a decade.
… My dad and sister died unexpectedly and it was just a wake-up call. Life's too short to be stuck in a job where you're miserable. I quit my job and took on a porn shoot for three weeks. It was a big dialogue movie so the first scene we shot was a love scene between two cowboys who were best friends and they fall in love and have sex in the barn, and it was just the most magical scene. The movie ended up winning best picture that year so I really lucked out. It launched my career — that was in 2004.

One of the reasons why I liked shooting gay porn in the beginning was to eroticize safer sex and [to show] that condoms aren't that big a deal and that really hot guys could have rough, naughty, dirty sex with a condom. It's been that way for years until recently. Then companies like Treasure Island popped up. They were started by a group of HIV-positive guys who want their porn to reflect their lifestyle and I totally get where they're coming from. It makes sense. They started a thing where it was sort of taboo at the beginning, then a lot more people jumped on the barebacking bandwagon and producing condomless movies.
With boys, condoms just aren't as cool as they used to be, and definitely a lot more people are becoming infected with HIV. But now within the last two years with Gilead producing Truvada and PrEP [pre-exposure prophylaxis, a medication regimen for decreasing the risk of HIV infection], that's really revolutionizing everything. People who are negative are going on PrEP, people who are positive are taking their medication and their viral load is undetectable. So HIV status is becoming less of an issue when it comes to porn. I still shoot condom porn though.
At Naked Sword, we do not require testing because we're a condom company, and for a long time I disagreed with the testing because I felt like it discriminates against people who are HIV-positive. There are a lot of positive people in the gay porn industry. In the straight porn industry, there are none. The minute somebody comes up positive, they put a moratorium and stop all production. They need to be safe, but there's a stigma associated with being positive that isn't as prevalent in the gay porn industry. I do encourage everybody to get tested once a month and if they have anything funny going on down there, please let us know. It's getting a lot more complicated. It's nice to just slap a condom on. Porn is not art, it is not
Porn is not art, it is not visual literature, it is not life. It is the process of normal human functions printed or filmed or written about and given for sale (or free now, thanks to the internet). All animals have sex but only humans find it necessary to put it on paper or film. There is no glamor in porn neither is there any real money or future, unless there comes a market for senior citizen porn (god for-fucking-bid) for the aging boomers!
HIV is still a problem and it still is primarily passed through sexual contact so I give the lady kudos for believing condom sex is still best and safest. Other than that porn is fundamentally boring and highly over rated.
Porn is all about myths and
Porn is all about myths and lies. It sounds as if she is buying into the myths and perpetuating the lies. Often straight porn is criticized for exploiting women, bring involved in human trafficking etc., and having no standards except the almighty dollar, but if she is to be beloved, straight porn cares more about its models than gay porn when it comes to HIV status, and that's sad.
