Troye Sivan has apparently decided that a normal music video was far too reasonable. His new “Party” video takes a Madonna sample, throws it into medieval England, adds Sir Ian McKellen as the narrator, and sends Sivan into the middle of a very unruly castle celebration.

“Party” is the second track from Sivan’s upcoming album She’s the Best, due Oct. 9. The stomping electro-dance song samples Madonna’s 2000 No. 1 Billboard Hot 100 hit “Music,” bringing one of pop’s most recognizable dance-floor anthems into Sivan’s latest era.
And if the song is about getting people together, the video takes that concept and runs directly into the nearest castle.

A medieval party with a very familiar voice
The video opens with McKellen delivering an appropriately grand introduction, immediately making the whole thing feel less like a music video and more like someone accidentally gave Gandalf the job of announcing the biggest party in the kingdom.
“The conquest is nearly behind us. Fires blaze from one end of the realm to the other. And what is victory, if not celebrated? For at long last, a party.”

From there, Sivan appears as a knight in shining armor as the video moves through a medieval world packed with revelry, sword fighting, choreography and plenty of barely dressed chaos. The video was filmed at a castle in Berkeley, England, giving the whole production an appropriately dramatic setting.
McKellen’s appearance also has a little history behind it. He first worked with Sivan when the singer was 14 years old, when they appeared together in a production of Waiting for Godot in Perth.
So yes, this particular reunion has been a long time coming.
Madonna gets a seat at the medieval table
The Madonna connection is doing plenty of work in “Party.” Sivan’s track borrows from “Music,” the 2000 hit built around the idea that music can bring wildly different people together on the dance floor.
Sivan echoes that spirit with his own party manifesto: “Party in the park / Party in the bush / Party under the bridge / Party at the restaurant / Party at the club.”
Then Madonna’s voice enters with the familiar line: “Music makes the people come together / Music, mix bourgeoisie and the rebel.”

It is a fitting combination for a song that basically treats the dance floor as a place where everybody gets invited.
Sivan and Gordon von Steiner are clearly not done yet
The video was directed by Gordon von Steiner, who has become a frequent collaborator for Sivan. The pair previously worked together on “Rush,” “One of Your Girls” and “Got Me Started.”
That history makes “Party” feel like another entry in a particularly energetic run of Sivan visuals. “Rush,” in particular, earned Grammy Award nominations for von Steiner and Sivan for best music video.
This time, however, the setting has changed from contemporary nightlife to medieval revelry, with Sivan trading modern party clothes for armor and turning the castle grounds into his dance floor.
And honestly, if you’re going to spend the summer dancing to Madonna, you might as well end up partying in a castle.
She’s the Best arrives Oct. 9, but “Party” is already making a strong case for clearing some space on the playlist — preferably somewhere with enough room to dance and absolutely no concern about medieval decor getting damaged.
