I have zero problem admitting that The Spice Girls are not only my favorite girl group of all time but that they also played a big part in helping me discover my sexuality in my younger years.
The shame in all of this is that they only produced two albums as a fivesome (Geri Halliwell (Ginger), Melanie Brown (Scary), Melanie Chisolm (Sporty), Victoria Beckham (Posh), Emma Bunton (Baby), and then one without Geri. The quality of songs they put out, however, were absolutely fantastic and went beyond the bubblegum pop standards of the late 90’s as the five ladies expertly approached other genres that included disco and R&B.
It’s hard for me, as a diehard fan of theirs, to narrow down my five favorite songs that they have ever put out, but I think I’ve come up with a good group that showcases the their massive talent. And no, “Wannabe” isn’t on here. Nothing against the song, it’s great and is their signature one at that, but there are several others that deserve the spotlight for reasons bigger than that.
There has been a ton of rumors recently surrounding them doing another tour (which should happen, as well as another album). So, if that does come true, let’s hope that the following five songs are on the set list for it.
5. “Holler” (Album: Forever)
“Holler” was the only song to be released from their album Forever, which was made several years after Geri left the group. This was one of their most understated releases, as it shows the girls diving head first into the world of R&B on a very mature track that discusses them getting freaky with their significant other. “I want to make you holler, and hear you scream my name,” as the start of the chorus only meant that these “girls” became women and a different sound was happening for them.
4. “Who Do You Think You Are?” (Album: Spice)
Easily one of the most fun tracks they ever made, “Who Do You Think You Are” became yet another number one song for the girls across the pond and rightfully so. The nu-disco-beat within it, mixed with Mel C’s major vocals, was just the right mix and helped them solidify their status as pop culture icons as the group continued to get bigger.
3. “Too Much” (Album: Spiceworld)
The glitz and glam that this song created was almost too good to be true. The Spice Girls did a really great job at balancing their upbeat tracks with their ballads, and “Too Much” proved to be a standout on the latter side of things. The video created for this happens to be one of my favorites as well, as it evokes all the passion that they have brought to the track to life.
2. “2 Become 1” (Album: Spice)
The perfect ballad. Yes, the song is about sex, but they did it in a way that didn’t push the boundary lines. Matter of fact, it did the quite opposite by teaching everyone about the safer side of intimacy within it (“Be a little bit wiser baby, put it on, put it on.”) Pretty much everyone from the group got a solo out of it, which showed separate points of views on the act of lovemaking done in a really profound way.
1. “Viva Forever” (Album: Spiceworld)
For one: check out the video. It’s incredible. Outside of that, this critically-acclaimed song really is the best they ever made as its subject matter, beat, lyrics and more are simply sensational to listen to. The message in the song is still left open to interpretation by many, but doesn’t that mean you’ve done something right when its not universally known as to what you are singing about?
