Lil Nas X is claiming yet another milestone and record. He’s now the first gay musician to win a Country Music Association Award.
This past Wednesday, Lil Nas X, and collaborator Billy Ray Cyrus, won the inaugural “Musical Event of the Year” trophy for the remix of “Old Town Road.” The two musicians beat several notable performers and hits in the country music genre such as Gareth Brooks for his duet “Dive Bar” with Blake Shelton, Maren Morris’s “All My Favorite People,” and Brooks & Dunn’s “Brand New Man.”
Lil Nas X reacted to the announcement of his win, which was done through Good Morning America ahead of the Nashville ceremony, with exuberance.

This is just the latest in an ongoing list of awards, accolades, and records that Lil Nas X has made in the past year. The musical talent won “Song of the Year” at the MTV Video Music Awards and beat big-name contenders like Ariana Grande, Drake, Taylor Swift, and Lady Gaga. This too was the first time that a gay man had won the award (since it was only created in 2018).
Then, “Old Town Road” holds the longest record for most weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The song beat out Mariah Carey & Boyz II Men’s “One Sweet Day” and Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s (Featuring Justin Bieber) “Despacito” to claim the spot. In addition, Lil Nas X surpassed the record for the longest-running number-one single by an openly gay artist on The Billboard Hot 100 after beating Elton’s almost 22-year record.
But Lil Nas X wasn’t the only LGBTQ artist to win at the CMA Awards last night. Kacy Musgraves won the award for Video of the Year for her song “Rainbow” as well as the Female Vocalist of the Year award. In addition, Ashley McBryde won Best New Artist.
Despite recently announcing he’s taking a break from music, it seems that both the country and hip hop worlds are being rocked by Lil Nas X. And honestly, we couldn’t be happier to see it.
