Marvel may be keeping Tommy Maximoff’s sexuality under wraps for now, at least behind the scenes, but Ruaridh Mollica is bringing one very important ingredient to the role: his bisexual self.
Mollica, who plays the adult version of Wanda Maximoff and Vision’s son in VisionQuest, has addressed whether Tommy’s sexuality will actually be explored when the Marvel series arrives on 14 October. His answer is essentially: he doesn’t know — but he certainly hopes audiences can feel a little bit of his own queerness in the character.

Speaking to SFX Magazine for its 9 September issue, Mollica said: “I don’t know if it’s explicitly referenced,” Mollica said. “But I feel like myself as a bisexual actor embodying Tommy, hopefully that comes through in just personality and self and is something that can be explored in the future.”

And suddenly, watching Tommy’s facial expressions has become a research project.
A bisexual actor playing a bisexual Marvel character? Interesting.
In Marvel Comics, Tommy — better known as Speed — is bisexual. Whether the MCU will carry that part of his story onto the screen is another question entirely.

Mollica isn’t confirming that VisionQuest will make Tommy explicitly bisexual, but his comments suggest he’s thinking about the character through his own experience.
That could mean anything from subtle details in Tommy’s personality to a future storyline that finally gives the character the romantic life queer Marvel viewers have been waiting to see.
Or Marvel could simply leave everyone analyzing a three-second glance for six months. We know how this works.
For now, Mollica is keeping the actual details firmly behind the superhero curtain. But the fact that he wants his bisexuality to “come through” gives Tommy’s introduction an intriguing extra layer — particularly because this isn’t Mollica’s first time playing a queer character.
Mollica has already played a queer role
In 2024, Mollica starred in Sebastian, playing Max, a young writer who secretly works as a sex worker under the name Sebastian.
So, yes, Mollica has already brought some very different shades of queerness to the screen. Now he’s taking that experience from a queer drama to the Marvel Cinematic Universe — and, judging by those Sebastian shots, we certainly won’t complain about having him on our screens again.
Now give the bisexual superhero his bisexual storyline
That brings us back to Tommy. VisionQuest will introduce Mollica as the adult version of Wanda and Vision’s son, but exactly how much of Tommy’s personal life — including his sexuality — will make it onto the screen remains unclear. Mollica’s comments leave plenty of room for hope.
Having a bisexual actor play a comic-book character who is himself bisexual doesn’t automatically guarantee representation. Still, it gives Tommy a performer who can bring his own perspective to the role, even if the character’s sexuality isn’t explicitly addressed this time around.
And if Tommy eventually gets a proper bisexual storyline, Mollica has already made it clear he’d be interested in exploring it.
Which leaves Marvel with one very simple request from queer viewers: let the man be bi. He has powers. He has family drama. He has a complicated superhero lineage. Surely he can have a dating life, too.
