Pearl, who made it to the top three of RuPaul’s Drag Race in season 7, has spoken out about the show’s titular host in a new interview on the web series Hey Qween.
The Brooklyn-based queen talked about quite a lot during her interview on the Johnny McGovern hosted program, but there was one subject that stood out more than the rest. This being RuPaul himself, who had a memorable showdown with Pearl during the show’s 5th episode.
“Do I have something on my face?” is what many fans remember most from Pearl during that confrontation, which had a lot to do with her perceived lack of drive up until that point on the show. She said on Hey Qween that what was shown was very edited down and that the conversation between them went on for an uncomfortable amount of time. Pearl talked to production about the situation after and they were able to calm her down. That worked in her favor, as she won that particular episode alongside Max and propelled her way to finale night with Ginger Minj and season seven winner Violet Chachki.
There was an alleged incident that happened prior to the stare down between Ru and Pearl, which she also discussed on Hey Qween. Each of the girls recorded a new version of one of Ru’s tracks for an album called RuPaul Presents: CoverGurlz 2. Pearl got “Hey Booty” to record, which she didn’t even remember the name of during the interview with Johnny. She did mention, however, that season 8 winner Bob the Drag Queen always played it when they were around each other as a joke.
“There is one thing that I have not discussed at all ever about RuPaul,” Pearl revealed. “So, I know that I was not perfect on the show, and I know that I was distracted about something and it took me a long time to come to terms with where all of it came from, and I know exactly where it came from.” Pearl met RuPaul while on set that day, where she admits to being “blown away” by simply seeing her.
“I felt like the only way for me to get any way on the show was to build some kind of relationship with the judges,” she said. “We were filming a segment, just kind of chatting, banter whatever together, and then the camera went down for a moment and I turned to RuPaul and I said ‘Oh my god. I just want to thank you so much. It is such an honor to be here, such a pleasure to meet you. You have no idea, like what this…’, just giving her that whole everything I wanted to say to her.”
“And she turned to me, and she said, ‘nothing you say matters unless that camera is rolling.’,
Pearl claimed. “And that broke my spirit. And that is the reason why I had one foot in, one foot out the entire time on that show. And maybe that’s me being petty, and maybe that’s me thinking that it should have been something that I never should’ve expected it to be. But in that moment, it was so heartbreaking because I idolized her, worshipped her, and I just felt that it was so disrespectful. I had never even been to LA before: it was so Hollywood, rotted, like how could you say that to somebody that is just obsessed with you?”
“It is what it is,” she continued. “That really explains a lot of my attitude on the show.” Watch the full clip below:
